EARLY TIMES REPORT
SAMBA, June 28: A gathering of more than two lakh devotees of Baba Chamliyal on either side of the Indo-Pak International border in Ramgarh sector near Samba on Thursday paid obeisance ignoring the poor pace of dialogue process between the two neighbouring countries.
An annual feature, the fair brings together officers from neighbouring countries deployed on the international border where Pak rangers hand over 'Chaddar' to be laid on the tomb of Baba Chamliyal on behalf of devotees from Pakistan and in return received 'Prasad' of 'Shakkar and Sharbat' for the devotees who anxiously await trolleys to cross over the zero line.
Dressed in colourful dresses, riding on top of the buses and bullock carts devotees of Baba Chamliyal braving blazing sun thronged the shrine to pay their obeisance since early morning.
Rough estimates suggested over two lakh devotees visited the shrine, said District Development Commissioner Samba.
The Pakistan team was led by officiating Commanding Officer Lt Col Qaiser. He was accompanied by several senior officers including Assistant Commissioner Sialkote, Sameeha Salim.
The Pak officer after attending a warm reception ceremony handed over a green "Chaddar" to DIG BSF Virender Singh at the zero line.
The two sides exchanged gift wraps and shook hands. Officers of the two sides were at ease while conversing with one another.
The Chadder received from across the border was later laid on the tomb of the saint by BSF officers.
Large number of devotees who reached shrine of Baba Chamliyal to find cure of their skin ailments were seen taking a bath with the well water after massaging the affected portion of skin with the clay and others carried water in bottles and clay in packets which they had brought with them.
Bahadur Singh and Chand Singh had come from Jammu to offer prayers at the revered shrine.
They said due to the miracle of clay and water from the shrine area their family members suffering from skin ailments were cured.
Another disciple of Baba Chamliyal from Haryana said, I visit the shrine each year.He said every time I accompany new patient because I believed in charisma as my own chronic skin disease was cured with the Baba's clay and water and then it cured the problem of one of my cousins. "A mela was also organised near the vicinity of the shrine and large number of devotees climbed muddy points to get a glimpse of the devotees standing on other side of the border.
The BSF men later filled two trolleys of clay and water which the men of the Chenab Rangers accepted for distribution among several thousand people who had assembled across the border.
