Omar inadvertently 'politicises' fire at shrine
6/29/2012 12:40:54 AM
early times report
Jammu, June 28: Chief minister Omar Abdullah has politicised the incident of fire at a Shrine in Srinagar by his tweets. In his latest Omar had tweeted: " I''m sorry but will some one please ask him how my government stands to benefit from destroying the shrine??????."
Omar had made this tweet after a statement by the grand mufti of Srinagar alleging that fire at shrine is a conspiracy against sufisim in Kashmir.
Grand Mufti Bashir-ud-din, who had given call ‘Dastgeer Chalo’ on Friday, had not only demanded fair probe into the incident but also action against those who proved to be behind it. It was normal statement from a religious head after the incident. The government should have responded by issuing a counter statement that facts would be brought before public in a time-bound action.

But, inspite of following rational, the CM had assumed this as an attack on his government and more so a personal attack on him.

It gets reflected clearly when in a seemingly direct attack on Grand Mufti, Omar had tweeted : "don't expect him (read Grand Mufti) to fear me but I would expect him, as a Mufti, to fear Allah when he makes baseless accusations. Sad."

This has clearly set the dice rolling for politicization of the issue and is becoming fast breeding ground for conspiracy theories.

The fact remains that sectarian feud is fast growing up in Kashmir. In the last three sufi shrines have been targeted by some elements who are not comofortable with existence of such shrines, which though reflect composite culture of the Kashmir, are fast becoming targets of a section which is getting increasingly radicalized.

Dastgeer Sahib holds special importance in sufi culture of the Kashmir and it's because of this reason that Dr Karan Singh, on his visit there, had said when ever he comes to Kashmir he makes it a point to pay obeisance at this shrine.

This statement holds importance has Dr Karan Singh, whose family had ruled J&K, had closely seen its culture and how it got evolved over the decades, including the growing streak of radicalization.

Going by the sensitivity of the issue, prudent approach of the CM would have been to direct completion of inquiry in a week's time and not entering into verbal duel with the spiritual head, which has potential of shaking fragile peace in the valley.
The CM could ill afford such a turn of events at this point of time.
