Mystery still shrouds Peer Dastgeer Shrine blaze

Srinagar, June 28: Sajada Nasheen (custodian of the Peer Dastegeer Sahib shrine) Syed Khalid Geelani on Thursday hinted at raising donations from the people for reconstruction of the shrine which gutted in a devastating fire on Monday last if Waqaf Board falls short of money while reconstructing the shrine strictly as per the digitized design that is already with INTACH.
Talking exclusively to Early Times at his residence just behind the gutted shrine, Khalid Geelani ruled out short-circuit as cause of the fire. When asked to comment on Grand Mufti Bashiruddin's statement that there was a worst conspiracy in gutting the shrine, Khalid avoided any direct reply and said. "he has put his view point and he has right to express himself".
Sajad Nisheen who displayed the holy relic retrieved from the revered shrine minutes before it was gutted completely the other day, said that he believes in divine power of Peer Dastegeer Sahib which will unravel the truth. "for me the only credible enquiry is divine and I am sure what is veiled will be unveiled by the divine power of Hazrat Peer Dastegeer" Khalid told ‘Early Times’. When asked whether he agrees with Mufti Bashiruddin that it was a conspiracy, Khalid said he has expressed his view-point and he has the right to express himself". To a question Khalid said, "Short circuit was never the cause of fire, however, it was not accidental too but I am not in a position to comment on these very sensitive issues". Khalid said his prime concern was reconstruction of the shrine to restore the pristine glory of the Ziarat and respect the sentiment involved with the Shrine.
Drawing a thin line between Waqaf Board and Jammu and Kashmir government, Khalid said the Board is the custodian of donations raised through donations and bequests and it is that money which will be used for reconstruction of the revered shrine. Khalid was apparently referring to the statement of Mufti Bashiruddin wherein he has categorically rejected government's offer for reconstruction of the shrine. However, he was quick to add that being a responsible guardian of the shrine, he would never like to flair up the volatile situation. Pertinently, the state government has ordered a probe into the incident which was, however, rejected by separatists groups and also by the religious clerics of the valley including Mufti Bashiruddin.
When asked if a coordination committee representing various religious and social organization to devise a common strategy as for the reconstruction of the revered shrine was concerned, Khalid said, " we welcome all those who have faith in Peer Dastgeer Sahib's divinity come forward and extend their support in rebuilding the revered shrine".

Normal life across Kashmir remained disrupted for the fourth day today due to a strike called by the Grand Mufti of the state over the gutting of the 251-year-old Dastageer Sahib (RA) shrine at Khanyar.
Schools, colleges, offices, shops and other commercial establishments remained closed while public transport was partially off the roads, private vehicles in large numbers could be seen plying on roads.
However, curfew-like restrictions continued in Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Nowhatta, Safakadal and Kralkhud areas of old city.
While clashes erupted on Monday between protesters and police after the fire incident, the Valley observed a shutdown on Tuesday on a call given by separatist groups. A spontaneous shutdown was observed yesterday as well.
