Statistics Day Celebrated in Jammu University | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 29: The Department of Statistics, University of Jammu celebrated the "6th National Statistics Day" in recognition of the notable contributions made by (Late) Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of economic planning and statistical development. Government of India has designated June 29 every year, coinciding with his birth anniversary, as the Statistics Day in the category of Special Day to be celebrated at the national level. The objective of this Day is to create public awareness, among the people specially the younger generation for drawing inspirations from (Late) Prof. Mahalanobis about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. The highlight of Statistics Day 2012 is to take up the theme "Industrial Statistics" and making concerted efforts throughout the year to bring improvements in the quality of data related to Industry, for objective planning and policy making. Head, Department of Statistics along with faculty, scholars and staff of the Department, Prof Rahul Gupta paid floral tributes to the eminent Statistician and deliberated about the contributions of Prof. Mahalanobis and views were expressed to identify remedial measures for improvement of the statistical system related to Industrial Statistics particularly the sampling frame, sampling and non-sampling error, schedules of data collection, timelines of data processing and states participation in surveys on Industries. Dr Parmil Kumar, Dr. Vikas Sharma, Dr Sunil Kumar, Rahul Sharma and Sunny Babbar also expressed their views on Prof Mahalanobis and Industrial statistics. |
