Indo-Pak ties down the precipice
6/29/2012 10:38:33 PM
The otherwise fragile Indo-Pak relations which had shown signs of some improvement during the last one year seems to have hit the bottom on account of three developments. The first being the disclosure made by Abu Jundal, suspected to be the key player behind the terrorist strike in Mumbai in 2008,which left 170 people killed. Jundal had been hiding in Saudi Arabia and his arrest by the Indian police had left Islamabad not only jittery but also peeved.
It is so because Jundal has confessed about his involvement in the terrorist strike and about the aid he got from the official and nonofficial agencies in Pakistan. His association with the Lashkar-e-Toiba and his training in a camp in Karachi where a control room had been set up for monitoring and guiding those who had been assigned the task of carrying out the biggest terrorist srike in Mumbai.
This has left Islamabad red faced forcing the establishment in Islamabad to counter charges levelled by New Delhi.Since Abu Jundal belongs to India and had, after executing the terrorist strike in Mumbai travelled to Saudi Arabia on a Pakistani passport ,Islamabad has been using his Indian origin as the tool for telling India that Jundal was a home grown terrorist thereby denying any link between him and the Pakistan based terrorist outfits and the ISI and the Army.
The second issue that seems to have soiled the relations between India and Pakistan pertains to the confusion cr eated by Islamabad on the release of Sarabjit Singh, who has been languishing in Pak jails for the last over two decades. Initial reports said that Pakistan President,Asif Ali Zardari, had announced his release but within hours Islamabad denied having succumbed to pressure from the Army and the ISI which forced Pakistan to change its plan.
Instead Islamabad released Surjit Singh another Indian prisoner held in Pak jails. The Interior Minister,Rehman Malik, has denied the Indian charge saying that Islamabad had decided to release Surjit Singh and not Sarabjit Singh. But reports even from Islamabad have revealed that the top Army and the ISI functionaries had made last minute efforts for forcing Zardari led Government to drop its plan on releasing Sarabjit Singh.
It is not for the first time that the civilian Government has changed its decision. Not long ago the civilian regime had to shelve its cabinet decision on granting Most Favored Nation status to India. The cabinet had okayed the plan but was sabotaged by the Army and the ISI. The third issue that has soured the relations between India and Pakistan is the latter's continued support to militants operating within Jammu and Kashmir and to those waiting to cross into the Indian state.
This support has assumed new dimensions with Pakistani troops resorting to intermittent border ceasefire violations in Poonch and other sectors in Jammu and Kashmir for the purpose of pushing groups of militants into the state.
That New Delhi is upset over the plans and policies of Islamabad is no longer a secret. What has been annoying New Delhi is Islamabad's luke warm support to war against terror besides its urge to proliferate and upgrade its nuclear arsenal.
This way Islamabad is trying to seal all routes that could help the two to cooperate and to promote cordial ties needed for peace in the south Asian region.
One report says that Islamabad's anti-India policy has the tacit support of China notwithstanding the fact that Pakist an has been trying to project itself as a champion for friendly ties with India.
