Technology from lab to land imperative for self-sufficiency
Export of fresh, dry fruits fetche Rs 2000 crore to state: Dilawar

Minister for Agriculture Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar today said in Legislative Assembly that agriculture production in the state has touched 16.12 lakh tonnes whereas annual food grains requirement is 18.35 lakh tonnes adding that efforts are on to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture produce. He said that 19 lakh people are direct cultivators whereas 3 lakh are also engaged in the sector as agriculture labourers.
Winding up discussion on grants of departments under his ministry, Mr. Zargar said that diversification of agriculture is on anvil and added that transfer of technology from laboratory to land is imperative to achieve self-reliance in farm production and upgrade agriculture practices. He said that subsidy on tractors, power pillars, foot-pumps and power sprayers is provided to the farmers to boost agriculture practices.
Mr. Zargar said that due to the persistent efforts of the department the area under cultivation of vegetables and floriculture has gone up considerably whileas in case of spices the area under cultivation is 105.5 hectares. He said 564 green houses of 80-sq tonnes size have been established at a cost of Rs. 45.915 lakhs.
Minister said under the centrally sponsored micro management production incentives to the tune of Rs. 2.384 lakh have been provided for production of 1589.60 quintals of rice and Rs. 17.866 lakh for production of 11456 quintals of wheat seeds during the current year. He said 149.12 quintals of oats seeds were produced and 56 farmer training camps organized on wheat crop production.
Minister for Horticulture Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir replying the Horticulture Centric discussion informed the House that for optimum utilization of the horticulture potential in the state measures are under way. He said fruit mandies would be constructed in the areas which are devoid of such facilities adding that attention is also being paid towards provision of cold storage facilities to the growers and forwarding agents.
He said that under market intervention scheme the cost of C-grade apple has been increased and growers asked to improve the grading of fruit especially apple for earning remuneration returns gradation system. He said that during this year state expects Rs. 2100 crore revenue from export of fresh and dry fruits as against Rs. 1900 crore during last year.
Referring to the hike in spray oil prices, Mr. Mir said that the matter would be taken up with the Union Ministry of Petroleum.
Minister for Agriculture earlier moved Demand No. 12 asking for an amount of Rs. 34576.58 lakhs and Demand No. 26 for an amount of Rs. 2803.47 lakhs to be granted to government to defray charges that will come in course of payment during the year ending 31 March, 2008 in respect of the department of Agriculture.
