Restrictions are bad but stone pelting is worse | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, June 29: Downtown Srinagar city has been under curfew-like restrictions for four consecutive days. The hardships of the people living in these areas are understandable and there is no denying the fact that imposition of restrictions under section 144 CrPc is always an extreme measure which the administration must be constrained to resort to in order to maintain law and order. State government has come in for some hard criticism for imposing these restrictions and the criticism has been mainly from the Kashmiri separatist leaders. While nobody can deny the fact that responsibility of protection and security of the shrine of Peer Dastgeer Sahib at Khanyar was primarily the duty of the state government, it must also be accepted that imposing restrictions is not something any government in power would take either pride or pleasure in resorting to. As the security of all religious places is the duty of the State government so is its responsibility of protecting the lives of innocent civilians especially the youths who are pushed to violence by separatist leaders and their sympathizers. Nobody can deny the people of the State the right to mourn the destruction of the shrine at Khanyar which has been a national tragedy, but equally important are the lives of the people and the duty of the State government to maintain order in the city. If a shrine which is held in high esteem and reverence has been destroyed in a mysterious fire incident it is the duty of every devotee and responsible citizen of the state to lend a helping hand in identifying the cause of the fire that wrought the tragedy. Throwing stones at the police and CRPF Jawans is an absolutely uncalled for and reprehensible act that must be condemned by every God fearing and peace loving citizens of Srinagar city. How would we be able to identify the actual cause of the conflagration if the investigating agencies are busy maintaining law and order in the city instead of being able to concentrate on the investigations into the mysterious fire incident? One might defer on a thousand issues with the Chief Minister, but when he reacts to accusations by separatists regarding the imposition of curfew-like restrictions, Omar Abdullah has stated an absolute truth. "Why don't you blame the stone-pelters? If I was (were) so keen to 'curfew you', I'd have done it without the stone throwing". Omar Abdullah said in his tweet asking those who curse the restrictions to look inside and judge for themselves who is actually responsible for throwing life out of gear in the city. Is maintenance of law and order, sanctity of religious places, peaceful conduct of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, tourism, education, ecology etc just the duty of the state government? Have the separatist leaders just one agenda? Is trouble the only way out of the political impasse in Kashmir? It is time those thriving on violence and instability looked inside and in true reverence to the saint whose love and devotion all of them claim to be dear to hearts and minds did some soul searching. Introspection is always better than accusation. Omar Abdullah bashing is fine as a political tool, but this happening by inciting youths to stone pelting that endangers their lives is something which must be condemned by everybody.
