PCC president likely to be announced next week | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 29: The Cong high command is likely to announce the name of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) next week. According to party sources, Prof Saif ud-din Soz is likely to be re-appointed the head of the State unit of the party. Party sources said the delay was on account of absence of the members of the party committee which would take a final call on the next president. Some of the key Congress leaders, who are members of the Committee, were busy with other engagement. The committee is likely to hold meeting next week and would then propose the name of next Congress president and it would be announced only after formal consent of Sonia Gandhi. The PCC leadership in a convention held at Srinagar last month had authorized Sonia Gandhi to name the new president. According to party sources, in most likelyhood, Prof Saif ud-din Soz would be re-named the PCC chief. Even though the Azad camp is not in favour of his candidature, but Prof Soz has the advantage of having time to work for the party in the State, which Ghulam Nabi Azad can't afford because of this engagements being a union minister. This hold much importance as Cong general secretary Rahul Gandhi is keen on working for the party and wants leadership to be more focused at the grass root level from where party hopes to drive power to make a difficult come back in 2014 elections. Even though Azad hold high political stature than Soz, and could be trump card of the party at the time of elections, but as of now Soz has been able to galvanise the party and has taken on National Conference leadership at number of times and has advocated the stand of party in direct and tough words. This has helped in galvanizing the party to come out of the shadow of NC, with whom it's running coalition, and stand by its own identity, which could be crucial in the next general elections and also in the state elections. The delay in announcement of PCC president is taking toll on the moral of the party as now major party programme has been held for long time and party cadre appears to be directionless. The Congress, which is an equal partner in the government can't afford to keep its cadre lying low when PDP and to an extent NC is making assertive political moves.
