Political matters to remain standstill in J&K till Presidential polls
6/30/2012 12:30:09 AM
early times report
Jammu, June 29: Even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah extended his support to UPA Presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee soon after his name was announced formally on June 15, making the message loud that his party would follow coalition dharma being in alliance with Congress in the state, his government has shelved all major political decisions in the state on account of which many vital matters have piled up . The 'standstill' scenario with such matters pending final nod and approval of both the coalition partners would continue till July 19 when Presidential polls are scheduled.
Sources said that government is deliberately delaying the decision on certain matters which otherwise should have been cleared for ensuing Presidential polls , for which no party wants to venture any risk of annoying the UPA and as such is in no urgency to assert on any matter or take any decision that may impact the prestigious polls in any manner. Sources said even though the coalition partners recently took up certain matters of political importance in its Coordination Committee meeting and discussed them threadbare and notwithstanding the fact that unanimity prevailed on some of them, still the government has decided not to take a final decision till the Presidential elections are over next month.
Sources also said that the matter with regard to conducting elections for Legislative Council seats and polls at Block level for Development officers , an important step towards strengthening Panchayats at the ground level have since been discussed and agreed upon by the government to be held anytime soon as these are due for a long time now. But these have been shelved as a matter of 'strategy' as political prudence demands that no major political decision be taken during this period that may influence or impact the poll prospects, no matter UPA has an edge in terms of number game favouring its candidate.
There are also certain pending matters with respect to making appointments in some crucial bodies at the highest level, where both NC as well as Congress have equal stakes, rather Congress has more stakes in terms of due share. However, latter is not asserting at this juncture and has chosen to maintain silence on many matters which could have made NC uncomfortable politically, sources added."There is no formal whip or nay such direction which prevents any government from going ahead with decisions but it is a matter of strategy…..political wisdom warrants adopting such strategy which is why no action is there in many matters…", said a senior minister in the coalition government.
Sources also said even though both the coalition partners National Conference and Congress have exhibited no urgency and willingness for expansion and reshuffle of the cabinet, but assumingly this pending matter for now has further been delayed and deferred under the pretext of Presidential polls, giving more time to both the parties to move on smoothly without pressures from any quarter in respect of intense lobbying that is normally seen ahead of such exercises.
