KATHUA, 30 June : How western civilization has invaded our culture, tradition and crafts can be easily seen from the condition of Gandhi Sewa Sadan and the apathy of both government and the people towards it. There was a time when the production cost in the Gandhi Sewa Sadan ran into Lakhs of rupees per month and now it is on the brink of collapse. The centre in Kathua used to be a hub of craftsmen which has now turned into a ghost house. Gandhi Ji's vision of Swadeshi is being trampled underfoot to the advantage of western and machine manufactured products. The centre in Kathua was established in 1995. However, the centre which could have provided not only employment but also exports is dying because of the apathy of the government as well as that of the people. The government didn't promote Khadi and people also lost interest in it.The result of which is that even the building of the Kathua centre has turned into a monumental remain. The goods being manufactured now fall into only seven categories and to publicize them the centre has only one sales man. Not only the building but also the tools and machines are getting rusted. |
