Rather for vigorous revenue realization, reviews performance of excise Department

JAMMU, June 30 : A revenue realization of Rs.813.54 crore has been recorded by the Excise Department during the year 2011-12 which is an excess of Rs.118.13 crore over the previous year's collection registering a growth of 17%.
This was informed Minister for Finance and Ladakh Affairs, Abdul Rahim Rather who chaired a high level meeting today to review the performance of various wings of the Excise Department at Jammu.
Principal Secretary, Finance, M. I. Khandey, Excise Commissioner, Vineeta Gupta, Special Secretary, Finance, O.N. Sharma, was attended by Dy. Excise Commissioners and other officers of the Excise Department attended the meeting.
Complimenting the officers on high target achievement, Rather said that the revenue realization is imperative for development of the state as it includes a major component of the state's overall revenue.
The Minister was informed that 222 persons were arrested in 3276 raids and 75910 kgs of Lahan destroyed during the year 2011-12 with a penalty of Rs. 27.23 lakh recovered from the offenders.
It was noted with satisfaction that at Toll Post Lakhanpur during the year 2011-12 a fine of Rs. 19.13 Lakh has been collected from tax evaders besides seizure of 4091 bottles of IMFL, 9400 pcs of willow clefts. While in Kashmir Valley, Poppy/Bhang over an area of about 12659 kanals of land were destroyed which is also unprecedented.
The Minister appreciated the department for completing the process of affixation of Security Holograms on liquor bottles in a time bound manner which will greatly help check on smuggled/illicit liquor in the market, if any.
By the end of July,2012, the production of liquor at local Distilleries/Bottling Plants will be done with affixing hologram. This will also boost the revenue of the State like other States which have implemented the Security Holograms on Liquor Bottles.
Rather stressed on strict enforcement and check violations adding that better coordination is required at all levels to improve the enforcement activities of the department.
He exhorted upon the officers to work with dedication and zeal to achieve the set targets and higher revenue realization. He also instructed the officers to maintain highest standards of integrity and be responsive to the grievances of the people.
