| Discrimination with Jammu: Agriculture ministry receives brickbats | | Abhishek | | Jammu, Feb 1 The important ministries of agriculture and Horticulture today came under heavy fire from both opposition and treasury benches during the discussion on grants in the State Assembly here. While charges of non-performance, nepotism, corruption as well as discrimination were hurled forth by the members, but in addition to brickbats, some of the members also showered accolades on the ministers. Asserting that rules and regulation were being given a short shrift in the Agriculture department, , Congress MLA from Akhnour, Shyam Sharma today said that there was no transparency in the working of agriculture department. Sharma also accused the government of perpetrating discrimination against Jammu region. He alleged that both horticulture as well as agriculture departments had become defunct in Jammu province. Making allegations that nepotism and favouritism was rampant in the agriculture department, the Congress MLA from Akhnour constituency said that one Abdul Majid, Deputy Registrar in the cooperative department has been given the super time scale despite the fact that two corruption cases have been approved against him by the vigilance department. “ People with inadequate qualification and having tainted image have been appointed and promoted in this department”, said Sharma, adding that even a middle passed person has been made an officer. Taking up the issue of discrimination with Jammu province, the Congress MLA went into a overdrive, claiming that Agriculture Ministry was working only for Kashmir but had done nothing for Jammu. Demanding a reply from the minister concerned, he said “ I want to know how many fruit mandis have been set up in Jammu whereas each district in valley has been granted a mandi”. The Horticulture directorate which has been set up in Jammu region has failed to perform. Alleged the Congress leader, asking “ How can a directorate have two directors and one joint director”. Criticizing the government for being non-serious towards the development of horticulture in Jammu, he questioned “ What is the performance of Horticulture department in Jammu. What is the condition of JAKFED and what is the status of super bazaars”? He also demanded that the government table the report of Pillay Commisson on the floor of the House. Picking up the thread from Sharma, National Conference leader Ajay Sadhotra also accused the Agriculture department of discriminating with the Jammu region. He demanded that government should announce a minimum support price for Wheat and Paddy as this was the norm in the entire country. Demanding action from the government, Sadhotra said that despite the fact that the state has been declared vegetable deficit by fifty percent, there was distress sail of vegetables in the state. Panthers MLA Harshdev Singh asked the government to fulfill the assurances that have been made in the floor of the House. He said that last year an assurance was made that satellite mandi for fruits and vegetables would be set up in Ramnagar, however the same has not been done till date
