Kashmiri mis-information campaign impacts Jammu 'commentators' | Non-Existent Delhi Agreement | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 1: Kashmiri leaders of different hues have been seeking a solution to the Kashmir problem as per the so-called Delhi Agreement of 1952 since decades now. The National Conference leadership is in the forefront. It has been seeking to convince the people of the state and authorities in New Delhi that Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and NC leader and Wazir-e-Azam Sheikh Abdullah had in 1952 signed an agreement in order to redefine the centre-state relations. Actually, they are preaching falsehood. There is no such agreement as the Delhi Agreement of 1952. Even NC ideologue and Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather has admitted that there exists no signed Delhi Agreement. What had happened was that infuriated Nehru had summoned Sheikh Abdullah to Delhi in the wake of the latter's anti-India tirade launched from R S Pura in 1952. In fact, he had challenged the state's accession toIndia. Thereafter, both met a number of times to discuss what could be acceptable to New Delhi and Sheikh Abdullah. Even before reaching an agreement, both Nehru and Sheikh made identical statements in the Parliament and Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly. Both informed the respective legislatures as to what they had discussed and agreed upon and that there were many issues which needed further discussion. But before they could give a concrete shape to the agreement to be reached between the two, Sheikh was dethroned and arrested on the charge of sedition in August 1953. Sheikh remained out of power between August 1953 and February 1975. It is indeed disturbing that while the NC leadership has acknowledged that Delhi Agreement was nothing but a statement on the inconclusive discussions on the future status of Jammu & Kashmir, a Jammu-based "Kashmir expert" has come forward to preach a lie and mislead people. Taking on the interlocutors for the undue importance they have given to "Delhi Agreement", this so-called Kashmir expert says that "Delhi Agreement was first placed on the floor of Indian Parliament and then it was introduced in the Jammu & Kashmir Constituent Assembly. Sheikh Abdullah signed the agreement with Nehru without taking the Jammu & Kashmir Constituent Assembly into confidence. So much so, the Sheikh's Cabinet accused Sheikh Abdullah of not being fair to the Delhi Agreement". It would be only desirable if this commentator and his ilk verify the facts. Such an exercise has become all the more imperative considering the fact that sections of Kashmiri leadership are vitiating the Kashmir's political atmosphere by raking up non-issues. They should not walk into the Kashmiri trap and, instead, counter them with definite historical facts. |
