Riot police may be taken out of barracks for smooth conduct of Amarnath yatra | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 1: As a precautionary measure, Riot Police may be taken out of barracks and deployed on the Amarnath pilgrimage route for the smooth conduct of the yatra. For the first time in the J&K police history, the riot police were carved out of the executive and armed wings of the state police for the protection of Amarnath pilgrims three years, or so back. "To keep the rioters and unruly groups of people away from the pilgrims, 1,000 odd cops were taken out of the two police wings to form the riot police some time back," a senior police officer said. These cops, drawn from different police training schools in the region, were specially trained in dealing with rioters, he added. "They have been equipped with anti-riot equipments," the officer said. He said these cops had been trained to disperse away the trouble creaters without causing them any injuries. These cops were always in a ready-to-go position, he added. The officer said though there was no apparent threat to the Amarnath pilgrims, police had to exercise vigil in view of the fact that subversive elements could go to any extent to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in the state. To foil any attempt of anti-national elements to disturb the yatra, police had intensified vigil in the city here and on the pilgrimage route, he informed. He said instructions had been issued to the field officers of police to ensure that the yatra passed off peacefully. Security agencies were also keeping a round-the-clock vigil on the trek route. Cops had also been deployed on the mountain heights along the yatra route, the officer said. Cops in Mufti had also been deployed in the winter capital city to keep an eye on subversive elements. Special instructions had been issued to hotel owners to contact police if any suspicious person was checked in their business establishments. Meanwhile, to undertake regular monitoring and review of the yatra related matters, gGovernor N N Vohra, who is also chairman of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, took a meeting late yesterday evening in Srinagar. He asked CEO Navin K Choudhary to visit the Nunwan Base Camp to check yatri movement to the Chandanwari control-cum-security gate and, thereafter, check whether the arrangements and facilities for the yatris were satisfactory. The CEO was also asked to ensure that all those crossing the control gates were duly registered pilgrims. The review meeting noted that more than one lakh pilgrims had paid obeisance at the holy cave. The shrine board has set up spot Registration Counters at Vaishnavi Dham, Yatri Niwas and TRC in Jammu and TRC, Srinagar; and close to the Nunwan and Baltal Base Camps. The administration had been asked to keep a close watch on the tentwallas, ponywallas and palkiwallas to prevent any over-charging from the yatris. |
