| Azad's sops in health sector annoy rivals | | Why focus on 'few' districts alone….? | |

Jammu, July 1: During his recent tour to state, Union Health Minister and former Chief Minister of J&K Ghulam Nabi Azad did not only annoy his political rivals from both within his own party but also ruling National Conference for more than one reason. A spree of rallies and shows with comments full of criticism about governance, ongoing development works apart, what has brought Azad into focus of negative political commentary from rivals is his continuous announcements and commitments of facilities and infrastructure in Health sector at the regional and district levels.
Sources in Congress party say that party is not happy the way Azad has chosen to identify and select the districts himself and go about making such announcements , no matter from his own kitty of Health ministry. This has created political imbalance and disturbance within the party and even his own loyalists are disturbed by certain things lately, as far as Azad's style of delivering 'political sops' are concerned. Even as Azad has been making such announcements in capacity of Union Health Minister and offering various sops like grant of health centres, sub centres , small hospitals besides health related infrastructure and special funds under various health schemes, something out of the way for his home state, but it is being seen in political corridors of having created a sense of discrimination at the regional level, sources said.
Sources also attribute this annoyance among the political circles to what latter see it as Azad only making such big, small announcements of Health paraphernalia everywhere except Kashmir , ignoring many districts distinctively. "Union Health Minister has made many commitments of upgrading Health sector in Jammu region, that too in certain pockets which is more than evident …..he has also made many announcements in Ladakh region but deliberately ignored Kashmir", said a party leader . It is not only the politicians but also common masses who have observed Azad discriminating with their areas, he said adding that even though Azad may be giving pretext of focusing on far flung areas but there are such backward areas in Kashmir as well which utterly lack medical and Health facilities where his attention should have gone in that parameter.
Sources also suggest that even though one of the main reason upon taking review and stock of Health facilities in far flung areas may genuinely be so with Azad's spree of announcements but questions are being raised as why focus is on limited districts in Jammu alone. Sources also say that on account of this feeling and observation , leaders within the Kashmir unit of Congress who would normally be more loyal to Azad have also felt uncomfortable with Azad's focus on one or two regions, that too on selective basis. Questions are not only being raised by leaders within his own party but National Conference leadership, which is already uncomfortable with Azad's critical remarks over functioning have begun to ask in whimpers as why certain areas are being neglected in offering such facilities from Union Health ministry. |
