Early Times Report
Jammu, July 2 : The main opposition PDP,which has a total vote value of 1584 in the electoral college that has to elect a new President for India, has not opened its card yet as far as its choice for the person is concerned. Party sources said that "we know that our vote value is not going to alter the fate of either Mukherjee or Sangma but at the sametime we are not going to make a wrong choice."The sources admitted that the upcoming Presidential election has left the PD P in a state of dilemma.'Since we are not part of the coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir it is not mandatory for us to vote for the Congress nominee Pranab Mukherjee." At the sametime the PDP does not want to place itself on a weak wicket in Kashmir if it sided with P.A.Sangma who has been fielded by the BJP.Once the party leadership announced its support for Sangma the NC leadership will spare no efforts for campaigning against the PDP for having joined hands with the fundameentalists. However, a senior PDP leader said that "we have not decided anything about our support either for Mukherjee or for Sangma but it is not the perogative only of the National Conference to "sail or sink" with the party in power in New Delhi. In support of his contention the PDP leader referred to the period when the BJP led NDA was in power in the centre and said that the NC was a partner in tthe coalition af ter Omar Abdukllah was inducted a member in the council of ministers headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee. The electoral college has 4896 members,776 MPs and 4120 MLAs,with a total vote value of 10.98 lakh.A candid ate who secures over 5.49 lakh votes is to win the election. Hitherto the Cong ress led UPA has a vote support of 5.24 lakhs.Hence with a vote value of 1584 the PDP cannot make or mar the fate of the two rival candidates. Indications are that either the PDP may support Pranab or abstain from voting. A final decision is likely to be taken by the end of next week.
