| Tax defaulters owe Rs. 11, 000 cr to the state | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 2: In a major expose, status report of outstanding sales tax has revealed how a number of government departments and bigwigs in political and business circles in Jammu and Kashmir have been left untouched by the Sales Tax Department for one reason or the other, even as the defaulters have arrears ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 crores for the past 10 to 15 years.
Documents in possession of Early Times reveal that top class politicians, private motor companies are among hundreds of sales tax defaulters which have caused loss to the tune of Rs 11, 000 crore to the state exchequer. The department has the list of defaulters but to no avail since strict action has not been forthcoming. Jammu division accounts for most of the sales tax recovery.
Documents of the defaulters of above Rs. 10 lakh amount which were supplied to the higher up revealed that about 60 percent defaulters are not traceable in spite of repeatedly warrant issued against them. List containing 20 pages of Jammu region reveal that in Jammu alone, 212 dealers are defaulters while it is nearly double in Kashmir region.
