7/4/2012 11:45:33 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 4 : Frequent power cuts are likely to affect the economy of the city of temples adversely.
While the locals somehow manage it with difficulty, the tourist finds it difficult to beat the scorching heat. Thousands of pilgrim tourists including Amarnath yatries arrive here only to perspire profusely. Unscheduled and prolonged power cuts add to the miseries of the hotel and restaurant owners.
The diesel generators only punch holes in their pockets. There seems no immediate respits as the PDD has announced fresh curtailment due to maintenance work in the Salal Hydel Power Project. The Association of Chamber of Traders federation has taken serious note of the development. The President, Yashpal Gupta said the frequent power cuts ahd adversely affected the business. He said frequent power cuts had become a permanent feature in the city. Usually the power cuts are effected when the traders are dealing with customers", he said. he has sought an explanation from the Chief Minister. He also threatened agitation if the appropriate remedial measures were taken immediately.
Inderjeet Khajuria, president, Jammu Hoteliers Association, said: "The number of customers has declined by 20 per cent to 25 per cent.
Either the hoteliers don't have booking or customers who have hired AC rooms don't pay the fixed amount. If a customer reserves an AC room for Rs 1,000 and if he doesn't get that facility, he will either leave the room or pay half the amount." He added that the government should come to the rescue of hoteliers keeping in view the tourist season. The state needs 2,300 MW but the state has a shortfall of 850 MW to 900 MW as against the availability of about 1,500 MW of electricity. The Jammu region was being supplied only 600 MW to 650 MW and the shortfall was being met by enforcing 8 to 12 hours curtailments in the unmetered areas.
The remaining power shortage was being covered byenforcing power cuts even in the metered areas.
