| Kalpana Chawla excellence award for Shameema Azad | | | NEW DELHI, FEB 2
Padam Shree Shameema Azad has been awarded prestigious Kalpana Chawla Excellence Award-2007 for women. Shameem personally received the award at the function held at New Delhi yesterday. The function was organized by Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh Old Boys Association (PECOBA) on the fourth death anniversary of Kalpana Chawla an aluminous of Punjab Engineering College.
The citation presented on the occasion reads ‘Shameema Azad, a singer and Padam Shree, is a living legend of Kashmiri folk music. Cut dozens of discs in Kashmiri folk music and has sung in more than 10 Indian languages. Lent voice to about 10 TV serial and feature films including Habba Khatoon and Bub. Winner of several awards including Gold Medal from Andhra government for singing in Telgu. Her songs ‘Mauj Kisheer’ and ‘Janat-i-Kashmir’ from her CDs are on every Kashmiri’s lip’.
The Kalpana Chawla Award instituted by PECOBA is awarded to the women showing excellence in various spheres of life such performing arts, literature, journalism, culture, professional service, sports, science, technology, business, industry, Government service, public service, social service, education, activism in launching public movements etc. The awardees exclusively for women.
The prize of India astronaut Kalpana Chawla had died in a tragic accident of US space shuttle Columbia on February I, 2003.
Azad received the award from Kalpana Chawla’s father Banarsi Lal Chawla at Indian National Science Academy Auditorium at an impressive function in which people from all walks of life were present besides a galaxy of intellectuals and luminaries.
