‘Harsh statements weaken coalition’ | Vakil urges restraint | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 4: AICC member and former Minister, Abdul Gani Vakil has once again urged the leaders of the National Conference and Congress to refrain from issuing controversial statements. Vakil's appeal has brought to fore the concern shared by Congress leaders over bickering within the coalition partners. The recent statement of senior Congress leader and Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din has shaken the National Conference. He (Taj) said autonomy was a closed chapter. "It is a closed chapter. There is no room for discussion over it. Sheikh Abdullah became the Chief Minister of the state on the basis of the 1975 accord reached between Mirza Afzal Beg and G Parthasarthy. We cannot overrule the agreement endorsed by such great leaders as Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Indira Gandhi", he said. The statement evoked severe reaction from NC additional general secretary, Dr Mustafa Kamaal. He accused Taj of distorting history. Kamaal believes that the 1975 was an incomplete exercise. "Some issues including nomenclature were left for the principles by Mirza Muhammad Afzal Beg and G Parthasarthy. The principles never met and thus rendered the exercise incomplete", he said. A senior Srinagar based columnist says the 1975 Accord is total and final. "NC should have pressed for the meeting of the principles. It remained silent and thus impliedly accepted totality of the Accord." Kamaal virtually launched a tirade against Congress last year. He accused former Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi of strangling Sher-e-Kashmir's voice. The harsh statements won him severe criticism from various quarters. The Party had to relieve him of his responsibilities. However, notwithstanding the stand of various actors on the Accord, the verbal dual between the NC and Congress leaders has been weakening the coalition; believe seniors in both he parties.
