Migrant labourers make bucks during sowing season | | | Early Times Report KATHUA, July 5: With the sowing season on in Kathua, the migrant workers from neigh bouring states and even from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha have started pouring in Kathua in search of work. Until recently, the trend of migrant workers working in the region was limited to neighboring Punjab but now the migrant laborers are great demand in the state as the local labour not only is costly affair but also is becoming rare as many had preferred other jobs shifting from the conventional trade. " Apart from earning good wages, these workers are at times provided food and shelter by farmers which is the major lure for them as they are able to save money, a migrant workers said. He added that they (Migrant laborers) earn between Rs 15000 and Rs 20000 each for one assignment. "Nearly 70,000 hectares of land is currently under rice cultivation in the region, sources said. When they finish work during the sowing season they go to home and return during the harvest season says Kuldeep Singh a former from (Changragh) Kathua. Starting from Kathua to R S Pura is considered the rice bowl of the state where thousands of hectors of land is under paddy cultivation, he said.Another worker from Bihar pointed that we do not get wages good back home and are able to earn some extra bucks here. "We have been visiting the Jammu region to sow and reap crops for the past four years. We have over all had a good experience working here said Babu Lal who poses himself as a head of a group workers on a farm. |
