Public Undertakings Committee visits Baglihar HEP
Members stress for plantation, development of Catchment Area

DODA, July 5 : The Public Undertakings Committee (PUC) of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly today visited Baglihar Hydro Electric Power Project (BHEP) Chanderkote, Ramban to review various stages of implementation of Stage- I and status of work on the Stage-II of the mega project targeted to be commissioned by 2015.
The Committee Chairman MLA Doda, Abdul Majid Wani and Members MLA Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, MLA Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, MLA Bharat Bushan, MLA Ashok Kumar, MLA G. A Mir, MLA Mohd. Irfan Shah, MLA Charanjeet Singh accompanied by Managing Director J&K State Power Development Corporation Basharat Ahmed Dar inspected various units of the mega power project and sought information about the generation scenario and the status of work on the second phase of the project.
District Development Commissioner Ramban S.A Batt, Executive Director JKSPDC Zahoor Ahmed Chat, Chief Engineer BHEP-I T.K Koul, Chief Engineer BHEP-II Narayan Mengi and Senior General Manager R.K Chenyal also accompanied the committee members.
Wani asked the JKSPDC to pay focused attention on the plantation and development of the catchment area so that the negative effects of the Baglihar Water Reservoir could be minimized which has resulted in sinking of land, landslides at various places across Doda- Ramban belt of Chenab river. He said as BHEP was a valuable asset of the state , comprehensive steps are required to reduce its negative impact on the area, particularly soil erosion. He suggested that proper steps like massive plantation along the slopes can avoid the threat once for all.
He stressed for taking steps to enable the local people to reap the benefits of the Baglihar Hydel Power Projects needs and suggested for Local Area Developmen . He also said that all the submerged /affected areas need immediate attention so that the further erosion of land and loss of property could be minimized. He directed MD JKSPDC to coordinate with respective MLA's and DDC's to prepare a plan for the development of local area for the benefit and upliftment of the poor people.
