Jama't advisory evokes ridicule | Tourists, locals ignore ‘code’ | | early times report Srinagar, July 5: Jama't -e-Islami's dress code advisory has evoked widespread ridicule in the Valley. The group has asked the tourists not to wear short or tight clothes. The tourism department has been urged to enforce the `advisory'. While the government has chosen to remain mum on the issue, the commoner has reacted. Like most of the tourists, the locals also describe the advisory as unwarranted, uncalled for and ill-conceived. Sources said Chief Minister has directed the Tourism Department not to react to the `advisory'. People, by and large believe that the group wants to stay in news overtly or covertly after the group's reaction to Syed Ali Shah Geelani's biography which said Jama't was run by Indian Intelligence agencies. Taking strong note of these comments, Jama't decided to pull out from Geelani's Hurriyat. However, the decision has not been implemented till date. Pertinent to mention, the people have been waiting for more than two years now for the group's decision on `divorcing' Geelani's Hurriyat. The decision, it is believed was delayed following killing of Jamiat-e-Ahlihadees President, Moulana Showkat in a landmine explosion last year. The critical reaction has forced the Jama't spokesman, Zahid Ali Advocate to issue a clarification. "We are not forcing them to wear Islamic dresses. It is quite against the local ethics and culture. We just want them to follow our local traditions," he said. The people associated with the tourism industry say they need not heed a needless controversy amid middle of a roaring season. Kashmir is set to break all records this year as far as tourist influx is concerned.
