Follow Dress Code Or Face Persecution | Fanatics ruling the roost in Kashmir | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 5: Who is ruling the roost in Kashmir Valley? Is it the NC-Congress ragtag coalition government? Or, is it the radical outfits like Hurriyat Conference (G) and Jamaat-e-Islami which are in full command? It is indeed Hurriyat Conference (G), Jamaat-e-Islami and similar other radical Islamist outfits which are ruling the roost, with the NC-Congress coalition watching their activities as a mute spectator. This assessment may not please Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his team members, but it is a fact that the present government has failed to establish rule of law and make its presence felt in the Kashmir Valley. If one goes by the general view in the Valley, then it can be said that there is hardly any Kashmiri who recognizes the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government. It is basically the radical Islamists, who do not enjoy the people's support, who are actually playing the shots and doing all that they want to. Only the other day, Syed Ali Shah Geelani had poured venom on India and declared his opposition to the official move to set up a few colonies meant exclusively for those internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus who wish to return to the Valley. He had equated India with Israel and said that the Government of India and the state government wanted to change the Kashmir's demography under the garb of return of Kashmiri Hindus. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, instead of initiating action against Geelani, asked him if he really wanted the displaced Kashmiri Hindus to return to their original habitat or to their land Vitasta. Omar Abdullah did exhibit his helplessness by putting all the eggs in the Geelani's basket. Earlier, Omar Abdullah had thanked the radical Islamists for helping his government in maintaining peace in the Kashmir Valley. He had not in fact thanked the radical Islamists. He had in fact expressed his helplessness, his inability to maintain law and order without the support of extremists like Geelani, whom many Kashmiri Hindu organizations the other day contemptuously dismissed as an outsider. Condemning the Geelani's statements regarding India, Hindus and displaced Kashmiri Hindus, Panun Kashmir had on July 3 said: "Syed Ali Shah Geelani who is responsible for decimating more than 5000 year old social structure and civilization ethos of the Sanskrit Indian civilization in Kashmir has no right to issue diktats to the original inhabitants of Kashmir as he is an outsider and not native of the land of Kashmir, as his ancestors belonged to Geelan, Central Asia". The fact is that while the Kashmiri Hindus and other responsible Indian citizens took no time to take on Geelani & Co, Omar Abdullah couldn't muster courage to exercise authority vested in him by the constitution in order to teach Geelani a lesson and establish his authority Yesterday again, one radical Islamist organization Jamaat-e-Islami, challenged the authority of the state and imposed dress restrictions on tourists. The Jamaat-e-Islami warned the visiting tourists to follow their dress diktat or they are likely to face the wrath of the Kashmiri Taliban. The national media reported this Taliban diktat and interviewed the visiting tourists to ascertain their views. All of them opposed the dress restrictions imposed by Jamaat-e-Islami. Some of them asked: Will the Kashmiri wear Punjabi costumes while in Punjab? Even today, the Indian media denounced the dress restrictions, but Chief Minister Omar Abdullah thought it prudent to feign ignorance. Credit goes to the MLA Tangmarg, who is also a minister in the Omar Abdullah government, who today told Zee News that the people of Kashmir will not tolerate the Taliban-style politics in the state. He opposed the Jamaat-e-Islami in unambiguous terms. All this only serves to prove that there exists no government worth its name in Kashmir and that it is the radical Islamists who are ruling the roost, despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of Kashmiri Muslims has no love lost for them. The manner in which some young Kashmiris blackened the face Shabir Ahmad Shah and used stones, bamboo sticks and iron rods to teach Shah and others, including Nayeem Khan, a lesson is a proof that there are no takers for the radical Islamists. Will Omar Abdullah discharge his obligations towards the state and its people by establishing rule of law?
