Kashmir exists, but Jammu & Ladakh also exist
Academicians Or Mercenaries
7/7/2012 12:20:36 AM
NEHA
JAMMU, July 6: One can understand reasons behind the Kashmir-centric approach of Kashmiri leaders, both "mainstream" and separatist. One can also understand reasons behind their bitter opposition to the demands seeking devolution of power at regional level. There is no need to report again and again those reasons, as there is hardly anyone in the state who is not aware of these reasons. Hence, suffice it to say that Kashmiri leaders are essentially anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh, that they have little or no respect for the Indian Constitution and that they see in the devolution of power the end of Kashmiri imperialism.
However, one just cannot understand why many academicians, mostly those who are Srinagar and Delhi-based, are airing views which are out-and-out Kashmir-centric. Why should they seek to poison the ears of the policy-planners in New Delhi by suggesting that Kashmir and its people are the only two factors in the state's political situation and that if New Delhi sincerely wishes to forge a lasting peace in the Valley, it has not only to come out with a "just resolution" but also dispense "real justice" to the people of Kashmir. This is not an overstatement. This is a statement of fact.
Let us quote verbatim what a Delhi-based academician of Kashmir origin said a couple of days ago while talking to one correspondent of Kashmir-based English language daily to set the record straight and inform esteemed readers of EARLY TIMES as to what such academicians think about Kashmir and Kashmiri people. What he said read like this: "Kashmir most certainly appears calm on the surface. There are a large number of tourists in the valley, educational institutions are running without disruptions, and regular day-to-day life seems to be proceeding normally for most ordinary Kashmiris. There is a renewed focus on basic issues of governance, including the scandalous state of health services in the state. But anyone who has lived in Kashmir or observed it closely for sometime will recognise that it is a tinderbox, and could be in flames at the slightest provocation and the surface calm would vaporise in an instant. And for real and durable peace you have to address the deeper issues, the conflicts, and ensure that there is not just resolution, but real justice. After all, families of those who were killed will not forget their anger & hurt in a hurry or forgive the perpetrators until they see that justice is done". Imagine who could be this so-called academician. It was none other than former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Amitabh Mattoo.
There is no reference whatsoever to the grossly ignored and politically marginalised Jammu Pradesh. Nor is there any reference to the woes and sufferings of the people of far off cold-desert Ladakh region. The entire formulation is patently Kashmir-centric clearly suggesting that it is the Kashmiri people who are the real victims and that there is but one way in which the "deeper issues" in Kashmir could be addressed and "conflicts" in the Valley resolved and that is by evolving and implementing a "just resolution" and dispensing "real justice" to the people of Kashmir. This academician didn't explain what he meant by "just resolution" and "real justice". But one can say without any hesitation that he meant what the Kashmiri leaders, including separatists, meant. Everyone knows what the Kashmiri leaders, including separatists, long for. There is no fundamental difference between the demands as put forth by the "mainstream" Kashmiri leaders and what the separatists have been demanding. They are using different terminologies which for the Indian nation mean just one thing: Accept what they say and you will see India breaking into smithereens.
This is just not fair. Academicians are expected to be unbiased, as they have no personal axe to grind. Look at the United States or United Kingdom where the governments invariably depend upon genuine academicians and objective and upright social scientists for right inputs. This is what the Indian nation wants from them. It is unfortunate that many an Indian academic and social scientist have jumped on to the bandwagon of those in Kashmir who preach falsehood, threaten India, put forth divisive solutions and obviously mint money or enjoy worldly life. It is because of their lop-sided approach that they are being dubbed more as mercenaries than as academicians.
