Death widely mourned, tributes paid to veteran journalist

Jammu, July 6: The management and staff of Early Times Group of Newspapers has deeply condoled the demise of veteran journalist and Editor -in-Chief of Daily Excelsior newspaper, Mr S.D. Rohmetra, who passed away on July 6. Paying tributes, the management of the ET described Mr Rohmetra's demise as irreparable loss to the journalist fraternity of the state. In a condolence meeting held in the office premises, two minutes silence was observed as mark of respect for the departed soul. Mr. Rohmetra made a niche for himself in the field of journalism after making a humble beginning and achieved epitome of success due to his unparalleled abilities of hard work, conviction and honesty towards his profession.
While the demise of the veteran journalist has been widely mourned, a large number of people and dignitaries from various sections of society attended the Uthala ceremony which was performed with observance of religious rituals this evening at Gandhi Nagar. Rich tributes were paid to the doyen of journalism and condolence, prayer meetings held to pray for peace to the departed soul. The news about his demise came as a shock not only to the Excelsior House but the entire media fraternity, a cross section of society and readers in particular who feel a deep vacuum has been created in his passing away.
The media fraternity while recalling the rich contribution and his long association with the world of news and newspapers have observed that late Rhometra would continue to be a guiding force for them in following his deep and dedicated sense of duty towards journalism as a profession about which he was passionate from his early life. Recalling his contribution as Editor in chief of the newspaper, they said he always upheld the ideals of journalism and never compromised with ethics while covering the events and happenings during militancy and other serious as well sensitive issues.
Cremation was attended by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who flew in to Jammu from Srinagar along with his Ministers and Advisors and wreaths being laid on the body on behalf of Governor NN Vohra by Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Pradeep Gupta. Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and Cooperatives Minister Dr Manohar Lal Sharma also flew-in here from Srinagar to join last rites of Rohmetra.Condolence messages coming from far and wide apart, dignitaries from various fields are personally paying visit to the bereaved family to express sympathies and share grief with them. Veteran BJP leader Arun Jaitely (MP), JP Nadda incharge J&K affairs and other leaders of the state unit visited the family at Gandhi Nagar residence to express condolences.
Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora today visited the residence of late S.D Rohmetra and condoled the his demise with the bereaved family members .
Expressing grief over the demise of late old hand journalist, Mr. Jora described late Rohmetra as a courageous journalist who never compromised on the principles of reporting issues of public significance in his news paper to look for redressal of their grievances. The Minister said that Late Rohmetra was an iconic journalist and a dignified soul whose demise has created a vacuum in the field of journalism which is very difficult to fill up.
The Minister expressed his heart felt sympathies with the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Minister of State for power, Forest, CA&PD and Transport, Shabir Ahmed Khan also visited the residence of late chief Editor Excelsior to condole his death with the bereaved family.The Minister expressed his heart felt sympathies with the deceased family members .He prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul. He said the late Rohmetra was a bold and veteran journalist and his contribution in the field of journalism has been laudable. He said it was a great loss for the society, which would be remembered for ever.
