Jaitley asks J&K govt to deal with fundamental Islamic groups sternly | Dress Code Diktat in valley | | early times report JAMMU, July 6: Seriously concerned over the Talibani diktat of a proper dress code for tourists visiting Kashmir, senior BJP leader and MP Arun Jaitley today asked the J&K government to deal with fundamental Islamic groups sternly. "These are organizations, which have always been trying to cause disruptive activities in the state. It is for the state government to deal with them with a heavy hand," he told a press conference here today. Replying to a volley of questions on the dress code diktat for tourists visiting the valley, Jaitley, who along with top central leadership of BJP laid the foundation stone of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Bhawan here today, said the state government must deal with disruptive forces in J&K with a heavy hand. The dress code advisory issued by Jamaat-e-Islami, Kashmir, for tourists, forbidding short or tight clothes, has also not gone well with some political leaders here. Also, local residents rejected the Jamaat's bizarre attempt and showed the publicity-hungry separatists their rightful place. Soon after the diktat was issued, J&K Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir had said there existed no such tradition in the region. "Society of Jammu and Kashmir has never accepted the theory of people wearing particular dress. Such things send a wrong message to the society and it will definitely affect the tourism. People and those who are associated with tourism will never accept such a dress code," Hassan said. Bhim Singh of Panther's Party said, "Jamaat-e-Islami does not rule Jammu and Kashmir. It has no relevance. We cannot take notice of any mad man barking. People of Jammu and Kashmir are very secular." People's Conference chief Sajjad Lone said, "This is an insane statement. They have a problem of making such insane statements. The best that they can do for Kashmir is to shut up. They should do that." Member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Kamal Farooqi, said Jamaat-e-Islami should exercise caution while making such statements. It was not the first desperate attempt by the Kashmiri hardliners to stay in news. People feel that these hardliners have been feeling frustrated because the valley has been returning to normalcy. Replying to another question about his reaction to the Supreme Court judgement concerning BSP chief Mayawati and failure of CBI to build up a case against her, the BJP leader said he would not be able to comment on it without reading the verdict. "It is common sense. One has to know about the judgement before commenting on it," he asserted. On July 3, the Jamaat had warned the tourists visiting Kashmir to face angry reactions if they failed to desist from wearing 'skimpy' dresses while visiting the valley. BJP feels that tourists would stop visiting Kashmir in the wake of such "stupid" statements. Kashmir is witnessing a surge in tourist arrivals over the last two years. Nearly 15 lakh visitors arrived here last year and over five lakh tourists have visited the valley this year so far. The BJP also feels that the interlocutors on Jammu and Kashmir have diluted India's stand on Pakistan occupied Kashmir by changing the nomenclature to Pakistan Administered Kashmir in their report. Jaitley, who arrived here on a one-day visit, said the interlocutors' report was prepared on the Centre's direction.
