Army puts down AFSPA revocation request | | | early times report Jammu, July 6: The Army has not accepted the proposal of the chief minister Omar Abdullah to lift AFSPA atleast from twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar on trial. The Army politely putting down the request of the CM had simply said 'it will examine it and take call latter'. The new Army chief General Bikram Singh made this observation during his meeting with CM in Srinagar when, he had made a first visit to the State after assuming charge. General Singh, who hails from Jammu, knows the trajectory and ideology of terrorism from the back of his hand, had made it clear to the Centre that Army will take a call only after analyzing the situation and by taking into account the ground realities faced by security personnel in the State. "Gen Singh politely but sternly told CM that such sensitive matter needs more consultation can be decided only basis of logic rather than emotions and politicis," said a senior Army official. Gen Singh goes by the book and has always kept the force ahead of personal fortunes. The Army chief wouldn't like to deviate from the stand of his predecessor and also of opinions of GoC-in-C northern command, the top man incharge of the security of the State, who had openly voiced opposition to its revocation even partial. One of the principal opposition of Army is that if AFSPA is lifted even from a single district, then it would give opportunity to terrorists to move into this safer zone after striking at some other place and then it would give the terrorist enough time to move to safer zone before Army gets permission from the district administration to arrest the terrorists. Army can't afford to take this risk as situation across the border and in neighboring Afghanistan is turbulent rather than normal and more so Pak has not given even slightest hint that it has stopped using terrorism as state police and also it will stop meddling into internal affairs of Indian: Kashmir. Gen Singh, who had himself been hit terrorists during his posted as Brigadier in the State, knows it and being a local of J&K understands the politics behind it. Even though the CM has deputed one of his trusted lieutenant to convince Army chief he has failed to achieve the goal as Gen Singh knew before hand what the demand was and who would be beneficiary of it.
