MLA unveils statue of decorated Martyr | | | Early Times Report
BHADERWAH, July 7: In a simple but touching ceremony, the statue of Naib Subedar Chuni Lal, Ashok Chakra, Veer Chakra, Sena Medal was unveiled by Mohd Sharief Niaz, MLA Bhadarwah who was the chief guest and guest of honor Major General J P Alex, Colonel of the Regiment Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry in the presence of JOC Delta Force Maj Gen M Ramesh Babu ,Bargadiar E V Reddy 4 sector and CO 4 RR Col Yudvir Singh Saki today at Gatha Park inBhaderwah. It is pertinent to mention here that Naib Subedar Chuni Lal was born in Bhaderwah in 1968 and joined the JAK LI Regimentin 1984. He was a daring soldier with an enviable record of combat experience. He was part of the team which captured the famous 'Quaid' (subsequently renamed 'Bana') Post in Siachen Glacier, and was awarded Sena Medal for his conspicuous act of gallantry during this action.In August 2000, while serving with his unit in Poonch Sector, Chuni Lal, displayed exemplary bravery in defeating an enemy attack on his post by shooting dead two attackers in hand to hand combat, for which he was awarded Veer Chakra. During June 2007, Naib Subedar Chuni Lal while commanding an ambush party near the LoC was engaged in a fierce fire fight with militants. Though grievously injured, he charged at the terrorists and killed three of them before succumbing to his injuries. For displaying exceptional courage, Naib Subedar Chuni Lal was awardedAshok Chakra (Posthumous) the highest peace time award.Unveiling of the statue was followed by laying of wreaths by the civil and military dignitaries and family members of the Junior Commissioned Officer. This event was also attended a large number of youth and school children of Bhaderwah. Smt Chinta Devi, widow of Naib Subedar Chuni Lal and children of the gallant hero, Miss Arti Devi, Miss Manju Devi and Manveer Singh were also felicitated by the dignitaries on the occasion . Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest, Mohd Sharif Naaz, MLA Bhaderwah in his address lauded the tremendous contribution of 4 RR Bihar in restoring peace and normalcy in the region and stated that the people of J&K will always remain indebted to the sacrifice made by this brave son of their soil. MLA Bhaderwah also appreciated Commanding Officer 4 RR Bihar Col Yudvir Singh for choosing fish pond now a picnic spot for the statue. |
