PDP lambasts govt for not empowering panchayats | | | Early Times Report RAJOURI, July 7: Lambasting the present coalition government over its failure to empower the ground level representatives of the people, the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) said today that despite a time lapse of more than a year the panchayats are still powerless. This was stated by Senior PDP leader Shahzad Khan while enrolling the new members in the party and addressing them. Khan said that it is unfortunate that the present coalition government went ahead with the elections to the Panchayats last year without bringing the required amendments in the Constitution for empowering a three-tier democratic and decentralized system of governance. He further said that the coalition government has only been talking of empowering the Panchayats for the last one year but unfortunately nothing has been done to actually empower them. The elected Sarpanches and Panches who are demanding their rightful powers and funds are being dealt with by using brutal force, even endangering their lives.Shahzad said that the coalition has also failed to create two other tiers at the block and district levels of the Panchayati Raj System. He said that in the urban areas, elections to the urban civic bodies have been kept postponing on one pretext or the other. He said that the present coalition government is taking level of corruption in the state to newer heights. This is pertinent from the unearthing of fresh scandals in various departments in the recent past. He said that one or the other minister has been found involved in some or the other scandal during the past few years but the government has not done much to book the guilty.Shahzad Khan also expressed his resentment over the acute paucity of water that has added to the woes of residents of Rajouri district. |
