Cross-LoC traders reiterate demand for banking facilities | | | Early Times Report
Jammu,July 9: During the three-day conference on Cross-LoC trade, beginning in Srinagar from Tuesday, traders and experts from either side of the LoC will demand banking facilities to be set up on either side of the border so that traders were not forced to bank on barter system. Though the Conference is aimed at finding ways for giving a push to the cross-LoC trade those engaged in import and export of goods on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot routes would make an earnest appeal to Islamabad and New Delhi to increase the list of items that were to be imported a nd exported. The traders are peeved over the way restrictions have been imposed on the number of items that were to be imported and exported under the cross-LoC trade agreements.Senior treaders said that though people to people contact was an essential component of confidence building measures promoting trade between the two sides was equally important for reducing t rust deficit. They said that the veil of misunderstanding and misgivings between the t wo sides had started thinnking since 2005 when Srinagar-Muzaffarabasd route was reopened for traffic and from 2008 the two sides stopped harbouring hatred after the trade links were reopened. The traders demanded that besides establishing banking facilities and resolving the currency issues involved in the cross-LoC trade there was need for facilitating a hassle free interaction between the traders on either side of the LoC. They also demanded that procedure for customs and security clearance for trucks carrying goods under the import-export programme on the LoC needed to be simplified so that traders were not subjected to any harrassment. Reports said that the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation (CDR), New Delhi, is organising a three-day conference on "Cross LoC Trade, Regional Development: Opportunities and Challenges". The conference starting from July 10 shall have participants from both sides of the LoC. "The conference was conceived in view of the importance of the Cross-LoC trade and its socio-economic impact on Kashmir," the report said. "The conference will explore future possibilities, opportunities and challenges of the trade by bringing together the stakeholders from both sides of the LoC", it added
