Exhumed the body of Nazir Ahmad Deka in presence of his wife.
2/3/2007 12:44:16 AM

Srinagar , Feb 02
After the exhumation of Padder's body yesterday, the special investigation team assisted by forensic experts from Chandigarh today exhumed the body of Nazir Ahmad Deka in presence of his wife. Deka was allegedly killed in February 2006 in a fake encounter after he was picked up from Lal Chowk area while selling Itter.
While forensic experts took DNA samples from Deka's body and his one year old son to biologically ascertain that body was that of Deka, thousands of people today protested near the site of exhumation while demanding that killers be punished. Deka's body was later sent to his native village Desu in Kokernag area of Anantnag district for burial.
Police sources said that Deka's family recognised the body from the belongings, particularly the sweater that he wore on the day that he went missing. While Decca was later allegedly killed in Ganderbal area, his family had lodged a missing report in Kothibagh Police Station in Srinagar on Feb 16, 2006.
"The body was partially decomposed. Body was buried along with a sweater and the family recognised the body after seeing the sweater and other belongings," said a middle rung police officer who was present at the time of exhumation.
The officer said that DNA samples from the body were taken to be matched with the DNA samples of Deka's one-year old son.
While the exhumation was on, thousands of persons assembled around the graveyard and started shouting slogans against police and in support of independence. Protesters demanded immediate action against the police officers allegedly behind the killings.
The situation got out of control when protesters tried up break the security cordon around the exhumation site demanding that the process be made open for public viewing. Police had to resort to tear smoke shelling and cane charging to disperse the protesting mob.

The clashes, however, continued for several hours and protesters regrouped several times while raising slogans against JK police.
Deka's wife, Tasleema, was present when exhumation took place. Tasleema, a Srinagar girl married to Deka some years back, had been searching for her husband since the news of his arrest broke out in Lal Chowk Srinagar. Tasleema was yet to recover after her delivery when Deka went missing.
