Asha Workers hold protest in support of demands

JAMMU, July 9: Asha Workers' Union, Jammu observed a day long protest demonstration in front of Divisional Commissioner's office Jammu in support of their demands.
A large number of Asha Workers from different districts of Jammu region participated in this protest.
Protesting Asha Workers holding red flags and placards in their hands raised slogans against the government and demanded recognition as workers and minimum wages.
Earlier, the Asha Workers took out a protest rally which started from Green Belt Park and after passing through the Asia Hotel, Bikram Chowk, University Chowk, Panama Chowk and finally culminated at Divisional Commissioner's office.
Speaking on the occasion, Comrade Sham Parsad Kesar, regional secretary of CPI(M) said that Asha Workers are doing a commendable work by informing the births and deaths in their villages, adding that they also work with the Village Health and Sanitation Committee of the Gram Panchayat to develop a comprehensive village health plan.
All the tasks entail at least 5-7 hours work a day but the government considers the Ashas as part time voluntary health activists as a result Asha workers are not paid any wages for all this work adding that they only receive a meagre amount of Rs 500 to Rs 1000 per month as incentives for the tasks they perform.
Sunita Bhagat and Anita Devi President and General Secretary of Asha Workers Union in their addresses urged upon the government to accede to all their demands Asha Workers also warned the government that if their demands are not accepted they will unleash a state level struggle in support of their demands.
