Can Congress afford to annoy NC? | JKPCC awakes | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 9: If Congress leadership believes National Conference additional general secretary, Dr Mustafa Kamaal, will lose his `job' yet again, they are mistaken. This time he is all set to play a long innings. Political circles believe that Kamaal was `rehabilitated' with a purpose. Scared by the growing popularity of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the NC leadership rewarded Kamaal a second innings-and this time he was told in clear terms to play like Sehwag. Kamaal did some hard-hitting. He challenged the totality of accession and the 1975 Accord. However, as the commoner in the State especially in Kashmir remained indifferent, the hard-hitting gave pain to the Congress Party. The Congress Party has awakened. The JKPCC general secretary and official spokesperson, Ravinder Sharma termed these utterances as 'highly objectionable', 'mischievous' and 'distortion of historical facts.' He has urged the NC leadership to stop it forthwith as it could have a serious bearing on the coalition. He also said that the NC was in power because of Congress. "Dr Kamaal should know that it is due to the support of Congress party that National Conference is in power and leading the coalition with Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister and his elder brother Dr Farooq Abdullah is enjoying Ministerial berth in Union Government", he said. However, the belated awakening is not going to serve any purpose. The State is going to polls next year and Kamaal in Sehwag's avatar will continue to `bat' hard. This is what the NC needs at present. Congress Party has limited options. It cannot, political experts believe, pull out of the coalition at least for one more month. The Presidential elections are due next month and NC is expected to play a vital role in getting the UPA candidate through. Secondly, if Congress believes NC is in power because of them, the Congress also enjoys power because of NC. For upholding self esteem, honour and dignity, one has to offer resistance and sacrifices. The Congress resistance to Kamaal tirade will cost them power and help the NC at the same time. Can Congress afford it? |
