PDD's decision asking people to share load draws flak | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 9: The Power Development Department (PDD) decision asking the consumers to come forward and share the load of electricity with the Department has drawn flak. The consumers have also been asked to intimate all information regarding the electricity load latest by today failing which the Department will take action. Taking serious view of the decision of the Department people have decided to go for agitation against the high-handedness of PDD authorities which for covering the rising corruption in the Department and follies of the officers are trying to make the consumers to pay through the nose. Who is responsible for the losses, what the Department was doing till now asked Vivod Gupta BJP State Secretary? Are not the PDD authorities and successive Governments responsible for these losses and why they failed to act till date, he further questioned? Gupta while expressing concern over the Departments new policy of asking people to fill up the forms and share the load with it said this way it was trying to cover up its own follies. He urged the Government to constitute a Commission to probe why such huge losses took place in PDD and why till date the authorities were looking this all as a mute spectator. Supporting his views Satish Poonchi president J&K People’s Front said that his Party has decided to launch agitation against the high-handedness of the PDD authorities. He demanded a thorough probe to find out the reasons for such huge losses in PDD. He while questioning the decision said that why people will share the load with the Department why the Department has failed to install electronic meters, which can determine the load of a consumer. While starting the process of installation of electronic meters, the PDD authorities have claimed that the area where these meters will be installed will not face any power curtailment. But it did not happen as these areas too were subjected to long duration power cuts, he added. Poonchi said earlier the Department had given a time frame by which the electronic meters installation process will be completed but later the same plan fell through as majority of the areas in the State are without installation of these meters. But instead of overcoming its own weakness the Department is trying the make the consumers a scapegoat, he said, adding after the electronic meters are installed every where the load of a consumer will be automatically determined and there is no fun of disclosing the load by the consumers. He said but the electronic meters too are not functioning properly which are mostly of sub standard material as the officers for the purchase of same get hefty commission. This needs to be looked into by the Chief Minister who holds the charge of Power Ministry also. Poonchi said that a particular consumer having one ton AC, one cooler two or three fans, a geyser, an electric iron and one TV set in his house does not use them round the clock and on what basis the Department will determine the load. Moreover, when there is eight to 10 hour power cut daily almost in all parts of the city it will not be possible for the Department to determine the load of a particular household which it will do on the lump sum basis in which the consumer's interest will be hit, he added. He said the Department instead of asking people to share the load should install electronic meters to determine the electricity load of every house hold in the State which will help in generation of proper revenue and also save the consumers from unnecessary harassment. The Department instead of finding a solution to the problem is trying to buy time by introducing a cumbersome and lengthy process which is neither in the interests of department nor consumers. If the Department is really sincere to save the revenue losses and increase revenue it should start the process of installation of electronic meters said Raman Kumar a social activist. |
