Bhaderwah people rue supply of contaminated water | | | Early Times Report BHADERWAH, July 10 : Ignoring completely the safety standards, the PHE department is allegedly supplying contaminated water, mixed with hazardous animal waste, to more than 30000 population of Bhaderwah town. The PHE department is supplying water to Bhaderwah town from Neeru river in Monda village. Though the authorities have "installed" a filtration plant, it usually remains non-functional because it lacks the capacity to filter the quantity of water being supplied to the villages. "We are demanding that a high-capacity filtration plant be installed, but the authorities are not serious in this regard," people said and warned that people would be forced to agitate to get potable water. Cattle are seen sitting in the water pond in Monda village from where water is being supplied to town. "For so many years, we have been getting muddy water from the lake because the filtration plant has been non-functional for sometime," people alleged. Not only this resentment is also brewing among people of town here against the PHE Bhaderwah decision to impose new water taxes on all households instead of contaminated water supply from PHE to people . The local residents have flayed the AEE PHE Bhaderwah for taking a unilateral decision vis-à-vis imposition of new water supply taxes and described its approach as arbitrary, alleging all stakeholders were not taken into confidence prior to any such move. "The proposed water tax is not justified as the public is already heavily burdened with the existing taxes and unemployment," Masood Ahmed Sheikh said. "We fail to understand the rationale behind the imposition of new water supply taxes. The PHE Bhaderwah has miserably failed on its deliverance level and imposition of fresh taxes has definitely created anguish among residents and traders. People generally don't hesitate to pay, but the PHE should also take some corrective measures to improve its delivery system," said Mohd Iqbal Tak. He regretted that the government was already grappling with the problem of unemployment and instead of announcing "pro-unemployed" youth measures it was bent upon rendering self-employed youth jobless. Neelam Sharma, a housewife said, "The PHE Bhaderwah has adopted a different approach for harassing the residents. They are charging from the residents for a service which they never delivered on ground. People alleged that if PHE Bhaderwah provide them clean drinking water from filter plants then they will pay Rs 800 per year to PHE instead of Rs 300 at present. |
