Abrogation of article 370: how serious is Advani? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 10: BJP leader LK Advani yesterday reiterated his party's stand for the scrapping of Article 370 to take forward the integration process of Kashmir with India. But the question is when BJP was in power at the Centre, why did it not take steps to abolish it? Like him, many other BJP stalwarts in New Delhi and in the State have been demanding the scrapping of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which grants special status to J&K. The fact is that for BJP and some other political parties, the Article has become a feeding ground. They exploit the issue when they do not have any other issue. In its national election manifesto, BJP had stated that if it was voted to power, the issue of scrapping of Article 370 would be its topmost priority. But it was not voted to power. May be because people did not want to be befooled on the issue anymore. It had contested the general elections with a commitment to abrogate Article 370 when it had come in power but it did not fulfil its commitment. So such utterances from BJP leaders now are not taken seriously by the people who understand that it was more a political gimmick. People feel that BJP wants to ride on the chariot of "Article 370 controversies." NC leader and central minister Farooq Abdullah had on February 13, 1998, said in an election rally at Marh that the Article could not be scrapped even if all MPs in Parliament belonged to one party. Kashmiri leaders have all along said that any move to abrogate Article 370 of Indian Constitution would lead to a revolt. But majority leaders of Jammu are in favour of the scrapping of the Article as they believe that such a step was must for the total integration of the State with the union of India. But let the BJP and other political parties stop exploiting the masses on this issue for all times to come because they are fast losing their credibility because of the "false" promises in the past. |
