Congress weakening Indian position vis-a-vis Pakistan
Merchants Of Death -- II

Jammu, July 10: How do former diplomats, who have served in Pakistan for years as Indian High Commissioner, and former Army General view the New Delhi's policy towards Pakistan? They are critical of the Congress-led UPA Government. They openly say in television shows that those at the helm in the South Block do not have the required will to set Pakistan right. In fact, there is consensus among most of the sophisticated and objective strategic affairs and Defence experts that the present dispensation in New Delhi has only helped Islamabad at the cost of India.
Former diplomat G Parthasarthy, who served as Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad for years and know many things about Pakistan, for instance, only the other day ridiculed the power-that-be in New Delhi and even went to the extent of saying that "they would have handed over Siachen to Pakistan on a platter had there been no hue and cry in India on the eve of Defence Secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan in Rawalpindi". He was feeling so disgusted and disturbed over what transpired during the just-held Foreign Secretary-level talks in New Delhi as well as within the premises of High Commissioner for Pakistan just on the eve of talks that he said that he had no hope whatever that New Delhi under the present dispensation will protect and promote further the Indian interests. He said New Delhi was depending on those who told United States for 11 years that Osama bin Laden was not in Pakistan and expressed the view that Pakistan will never accept its involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks. He was absolutely right. Pakistan has consistently dismissed our dossiers as no more than pieces of literature.
Satish Chandra, another former diplomat who had also served in Pakistan as Indian High Commissioner for years was even more critical. He not only questioned the very policy of the present dispensation towards Pakistan, but even accused the political establishment of weakening the resolve of the Indian Army. He did not agree with those who had said that the Indian position had become very strong after the arrest of Ajmal Kasab and Jabi-ud-Din Ansari, alias Abu Jundal, and that New Delhi must make optimum use of the information these two captured terrorists had provided. He said "ignore Kasab and Jundal, as we know for sure that the Pakistani ISI (read Islamabad) has caused in India Mumbai after Mumbai and that Mumbai alone witnessed five dreaded attacks". He said Islamabad was exploiting the weak-kneed Indian policies and that it could go to any extent to promote its geo-political interests in the region. He, like Parthasarthy, said that "Islamabad and terrorism are two sides of the same coin" and that New Delhi committed a blunder when it walked into the Pakistani trap and said in the presence of former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf at Havana (Cuba) that "Pakistan, like India, is a victim of terrorism". In other words, he said the aggressed upon equated itself with the aggressor, thus emboldening further the latter to cause more terror attacks in India.
Satish Chandra said it would be futile to engage with Pakistan, as Islamabad will never see reason. On the contrary, he suggested that India should prepare itself to defeat the Pakistani evil designs and opined that the best way to put pressure on Islamabad would be to strengthen the Indian Army by equipping it with sophisticated weapons. He even suggested that New Delhi needed to work inside Pakistan to keep it busy so that it doesn't find time to turn towards India. He did not elaborate this suggestion for obvious reasons.
Former Lt Gen Shankar Prasad also expressed identical views. In fact, he accused the political establishment of not doing anything to strengthen our security grid. He said that India has 13 lakh-strong Army, which is committed but ill-equipped. His suggestion was that there was but one way in which Pakistan could be shown its rightful place and that is by strengthening our Army.
The truth, in short, is that many of our Defence experts and Pakistan-watchers have lost faith in the Indian political establishment. It's no wonder then that Pakistan is taunting and humiliating us on a daily basis. Hence, it is only natural when the concerned Indians accuse the Congress-led Government of weakening Indian position vis-a-vis Pakistan. Will the Congress party stop doing business with merchants of death and destruction? (Concluded)
