YLA opposes move to curtail powers of BCI
7/11/2012 11:12:27 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
UDHAMPUR, July 11: Young Lawyers Association (YLA), Udhampur has strongly opposed the proposed move of the Congress-led UPA govt at the Centre to curtail the powers of the Bar Council of India (BCI) which is highest regulating authority in respect of legal profession in whole of the country. While strongly opposing the move of the government, Advocate Sunny Mahajan, President Young Lawyers Association, Udha-mpur said that the move of the Centre government is clearly an attack on the independence of legal profession in the country. Mahajan said that by passing National Higher Education Research Bill, the govt wants to curtail the powers of the Bar Council of India which is unacceptable and without any justifiable reason. He said it is the Bar Council of India which governs the curriculum to be adopted in various law colleges/schools which are imparting legal knowledge to lakhs of aspirants. He said that even the advocates are enrolled under the Bar Council of India, and the move of the govt is most unwarranted and the lawyers will oppose this move tooth and nail. While also taking the State Govt to task, he said that the NC-Congress coalition in the state has been continuously trying to interfere in the judicial set up which is unwarranted and highly condemnable. Mahajan said that with the implementation of the new "J&K (Residential & Commercial) Tenancy Act 2012," the powers to hear the eviction suits will be transferred to the Revenue authorities which are presently lying with the Civil Courts. While warning the Govt of serious consequences in case the bill is not reversed at the earliest, Mahajan threatened that the lawyers will not hesitate in coming to the streets and choose an agitational path for the fulfillment of their demands if they were not met at the earliest like they did about 6 months ago when the state govt was trying to transfer the registration powers to the revenue department.
