| No let up in fleecing of Vaishno Devi devotees by auto rickshaw | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
katra, July 11: Every day hundreds of devotees throng to Katra the base camp of Holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi who often complaint about being fleecing through over charging by auto rickshaw owners plying from bus-stand to various locations of the Katra town.
Hundreds of devotees often get fleeced by the excessive charging as flat rates by auto-owners in the lack of the basic monitoring agencies. "Even the locals populace too have raised their voice of concern against the huge fares being usually charged by the auto-drivers, a local Rakesh Sharma said further adding, "as at times locals too have suffered a lot due to this over charging.'
Criticizing the concerned authorities, the locals population also lamented that the concerned transport authorities has neither made any effort to indicate the Kms distances from the main bus-stand to different routes and nor clearly mentioned the real charges to be paid and upto what distances.
The heated arguments between the passengers and auto drivers now have become a routine affair for the people living around the bus stand and other localities.
Blaming upon the concerned ARTO Reasi for being reluctant to handle the menace of 'overcharging,' the locals alleged this issue not only paints a wrong picture of people of area but also will discourage the religious tourism in the area. When contacted an official with the ARTO office told that as per official notification, fare for the 1 KM- Rs 12.50 and after every subsequent rise in 1Km, Rs 9.50 is to be paid up in addition.
However to the question about non-installation of Information boards about km- distances on different routes, he said this doesn't fall under their jurisdiction as it comes under the jurisdiction of PWD. If these shifting claims serve the purpose or not but the pilgrims are to face the heat of this negligence, locals said.
When talked to Naib Teshildar Katra, Sher singh too has assured to take up the concern matter with ARTO Reasi to correct such anomalies including serious checking of licenses of young auto-drivers, fare lists of different routes to be attached inside the autos besides regular wearing of auto driver's uniform with their name plate tag. |
