67 deaths of Amarnath yatris in 17 days, VHP, Sena protest, demand high level probe

Early Times report
JAMMU, July 11: As there has been alarming rise in the death toll of Amarnath pilgrim during this year's yatra with the death of six more persons since late night yesterday taking the toll to 67, various organizations have openly held the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) and State administration responsible for the same.
The Vishaw Hindu Parishad (VHP) which has from the very beginning targeting both Board and State Government for its failure on Amarnath yatra said had the Government agreed to continue the yatra for two moths the death toll would have not gone to such an extent as the number of yatris visiting daily would have been far less than the present number.
VHP state president Dr Rama Kant Dubey while talking to reporters here today said that there are no adequate arrangements for pilgrims enroute and the Board has also failed to provide proper medicare facilities to pilgrims. He demanded a high level probe to find out the cause of deaths of 67 pilgrims in 17 days of pilgrimage. He said there are reports that Board is facing shortage of oxygen cylinders and the claims made by the SASB of rushing additional supply of oxygen cylinders was totally wrong.
He said there are also reports that the yatris face problems in shifting dead to their respective states and proper arrangements of mortuaries are not in hospitals with the result the dead are kept in hospital labs.
He said VHP from the very beginning has been demanding adequate arrangements for the yatris and it has offered the services of volunteers for clearing the track in the beginning but the offer was not only turned down but the youth who volunteered to visit Baltal for this purpose were arrested. Expressing grave concern over the callousness of the Board and State Government he demanded elaborate arrangements be made for the pilgrims in view of their increasing rush. The one of the main reasons for the increasing rush was that the Board rejected to run yatra for two months from Jesht Purnima to Sawan Purnima and this was taken seriously by the devotees of Lord Shiva all over the country who in large numbers are visiting holy cave daily. VHP leader said the increasing deaths has been a cause of concern for the organization and Government as well as Board should take elaborate steps in checking the same.
Meanwhile Shiv Sena Bala Sahib Thakeray J&K State Unit has also held Board and State Government responsible for the increasing deaths of Amarnath yatris during this year's pilgrimage.
The party which held a protest demonstration here today against the increasing death toll of the pilgrims warned to intensify the agitation in case the proper steps were not taken by the Government to arrest the same.
President of Sena Ashok Gupta said SASB and State Government were responsible for increasing deaths of the yatris. A large number of activists of Sena and Dogra Front took out a protest march in the city today against the increasing deaths of the pilgrims. They alleged that the Board and Government failed to tackle the increasing trend of deaths.
They also accused the J&K Government of its total failure in providing the medicare facilities to pilgrims and alleged that the senior ministers of Jammu are silent on the issue. Gupta has also sought immediate intervention of Chief Minister on the issue. He said the deaths were avoidable and the authorities can't escape the responsibilities.
