Rotary Club organizes seminar on AIDS awareness

A seminar on AIDS awareness programme was organized today by the Rotary Club Jammu in collaboration with AIDS Control Society J&K at Transport Nagar. The Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma was the chief guest.
Project Director J&K AIDS Control Society Dr. Wani, President Rotary Club Jammu Mr. J. S. Gandok, Secretary Dr. Dushant and Project Director Rotarian P. S. Jaggi were also present.
Addressing on the occasion, Mr. Sharma said that prevention is better than cure and asked the transporters and truckers to adopt AIDS prevention measures to control spread of dreaded disease which has already taken many precious lives. He said this disease cannot be cured and there is no medicine available to save the HIV positive patients and added that only way of protection is to live a simple and faithful life to their spouse. He said all religions teaches moral values and one who adhere these only help himself, his family and society as a whole.
Mr. Sharma advised them to take the message of AIDS prevention to every nook and corner of the state and take pledge to aware many more so that this dreaded disease is rooted out from the state. He said government has initiated a number of programmes which includes holding up of seminars, debates and quiz competitions in educational institutions and interaction sessions with elected representatives of various institutions so that people at all levels must know about the dreaded disease and take preventive measures. He said Anti-HIV drugs are also made available at GMC Jammu, Srinagar and AIIMS and will shortly be available at the district hospitals but he added that these drugs will not save lives but only increase the life span.
Appreciating the Rotary Club Jammu Mr. Sharma said that Club is always at the helm of needy and poor people of the society and has adopted many welfare programmes to supplement the governments’ programmes aimed at the betterment of the general public. He said the Rotarians are holding polio immunization camps, providing free artificial limbs to the handicapped and organizing eye camps.
Dr. Wani in his speech said that value based living life style as enshrined by all religions is the only key to get rid off dreaded disease AIDS. He said that it becomes the duty of every individual to educate their friends, relatives and all others in the locality about the dangerous disease and motivate them to adopt preventive measures to help the government to make the society free from HIV.
He asked the audience to take pledge that they understand HIV AIDS, spread AIDS preventive measures, faithful to their spouse and be friendly with HIV victims and treat them affectionately.
