Why are Farooq, Omar maintaining conspicuous silence?
Kamaal's Anti-Congress Campaign
7/12/2012 1:01:45 AM
Rustam

JAMMU, July 11: NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal has unleashed a no-holds-barred propaganda blitz against the JKPCC and the Congress Ministers and the Congress high command. He has been abusing and insulting the local Congress leadership on a daily basis and accusing the Congress high command and New Delhi of maltreating Kashmiris and not fulfilling the so-called promises they made from time to time. He has been openly snubbing and ridiculing the local Congress leaders, saying he doesn't recognize them as leaders. He has been even accusing the senior Congress Minister Taj Mhi-ud-Din of winning the assembly elections from the Uri assembly constituency with the help of Army. He is not only humiliating the local Congress leadership and accusing the Congress ministers of being unfair to the NC workers, but also saying that the Congress had no role in the formation of the NC-led government in the state in 2009 and that the NC formed the government because it was invited by the Governor to form it, as it was the single largest party in the legislature. Besides, he has been abusing the Army and holding it responsible for various violent incidents, including attacks on the CRPF camps. He has even challenged the 1975 accord under which his bewildered and out-on-the-limb father got state power on a platter. He, in short, has crossed all the lines to paint the local Congress leadership, the Congress high command and New Delhi black.
The extent of provocation caused by the NC general secretary could be gauged from the fact that even the spokesperson of the Congress party, who speaks very rarely, had to issue a statement a couple of days ago and reminded the NC additional secretary that the NC is in power because of the Congress's support and that he must keep his mouth shut. Even yesterday, he and several other local Congress leaders, all Kashmir-based, took on the NC general secretary and warned him to behave failing which the Congress would have its own way. They asked him to respect coalition dharma and not cross the Lakshman Rekha. The Congress spokesperson even stated that the JKPCC would take up the issue with the Congress high command. On the other hand, Taj Mohi-ud-Din has decided to sue the NC additional general secretary for his accusation that he won the Assembly election with the help of the Army.
All these things are in public domain. It is intriguing that neither Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the party president, nor Farooq Abdullah, who is patron of the party and enjoying power at the Centre as Cabinet Minister, has thought it necessary to intervene and rein in the out-of-control NC additional general secretary. Their silence has only strengthened the people's belief that they and Mustafa Kamaal are working as per a strategy. They are asking what has happened to Farooq Abdullah who only last year unceremoniously removed Mustafa Kamaal from the posts of additional general secretary and chief spokesperson on the ground that that the latter had been speaking against the Congress. They are also asking what has happened to Omar Abdullah who had reportedly expressed his unhappiness last year over the political conduct of his uncle. They are all questioning the silence of Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah.
The ongoing conflict between the two coalition partners is sure to adversely impact the functioning of the government which has already been at the receiving end, as it has failed to deliver on any front and which is being dismissed by one and all as the most corrupt, irresponsible and unpopular. It is time for the Congress leadership to act and assert and tell its coalition partner that it has already gone too far.
