Militant attacks hovering over ….... | | | ET Report Srinagar, July 11: Following a sudden spurt in militant attacks and inputs of LeT planning deadly attacks, the security agencies have revived the earlier practice of area-domination through night patrolling and roadside frisking in all sensitive areas, especially the security has been beefed up en-route Shri Amarnath holy cave through Pahalgam and Baltal. Though the practice of joint night patrolling (area-domination) by Army, CRPF and JK Police was revived in several parts of the Valley following spurt in militancy- related incidents in the month of June, however, after Pampore attack, in which two armymen were killed, vigil along Amarnath route has been intensified and Anantnag headquartered Rashtriya Rifles men have been deployed in large numbers all along the most difficult terrain from Chandanwari to the holy cave to thwart any attempt by militants. "Just a couple of days before Pampore attack, there were specific inputs that LeT is planning to carry out attack. It was learned through intercepts that LeT is preparing for an attack named as "fidayeen yatra"" a police officer wishing anonymity told Early Times. He said that police top brass discussed the issue in a meeting and accordingly security measures were reviewed, however, he said, we were not expecting attack in Pampore area though it was observed the "fidayeen yatra" was just to divert the attention of the security agencies. However, following latest incidents, 1 sector Rashtriya Rifles has started night patrolling in South Kashmir right from Jawahar Tunnel up to the holy cave. Despite severe weather conditions and difficult terrain, RR is guarding the route on one hand and on the other hand providing basic needs of life including medical amenities to yatris. "Rashtriya Rifles is doing a commendable job by continuously patrolling the heights astride the Amarnath route. About 15 posts spread on distance of 30 km's in difficult terrain and severe weather conditions have been established to ensure incident free yatra . Cdr 1 sector RR, Brigadier JV Prasad, is monitoring human care and security situation himself" a senior RR official at Pahalgam told Early Times. He said that RR is doing a commendable job in very difficult situations like fair weather conditions en-route holy cave and sudden rise in militancy related incidents. "RR is providing assistance to the yatris in extreme weather conditions at different spots like Chandanwari, Panjtarni, Sheshnag, Pisu top Mahaguns pass and various other places. "We are also providing physical help to the yatris who develop many problems due to long trekking and severe weather conditions" RR official said. However, militancy is the major challenge. 1 sector RR has revived night patrolling and area domination to thwart any attempts of ferrying explosives from one place to another by the militants. " RR, CRPF and J&K police has started area domination during the night and we are hopeful that things will again be under control soon," a senior police official told Early Times. Police sources say that a multipronged strategy has been devised to provide security to the Sarpanchs and Panchs who have become the soft target in south Kashmir and at the same time we are taking extraordinary measures to ensure incident free yatra. It merits a mention here that South Kashmir has also witnessed two incidents of decamping of weapons from police guards. The posters threatening the elected Panchs and Sarpanches had surfaced in south Kashmir first in September last year, but the first attack on elected Sarpanchs and Panchs by suspected militants according to police records took place on November 12, 2011. On that day suspected militants opened fire on a Sarpanch at bus-stand Tral. Though government at first attributed the attacks on elected panches to personal rivalry and police also issued statements on similar lines but a sudden rise in militant attacks which followed enmasse resignation by hundreds of panches and sarpanches, foolproof security arrangements have been put in place in South Kashmir. Of late the Pampore attack on army is perceived to be a prelude to dangerous situation. |
