Early Times Report
Jammu, July 11: Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani seems interested in streamlining his ties with Jama't-e-Islami. He supported the Jama't dress advisory for tourists even as the organization issued a clarification that it was misrepresented by the press on the issue.
Interestingly the Chief Minister also issued a word of support. He said the media made it an issue otherwise there was nothing wrong with the Jama't advisory.
The Jama't had urged the tourists to refrain from wearing tight clothes and miniskirts in Kashmir. "It was against the tenants of Islam", a spokesman of Jama't said last week.
The advisory, however, evoked widespread ridicule from all quarters. However, Geelani's support has surprised political circles. It has come at a time when Jama't is considering a pullout from Geelani's Hurriyat.
Geelani's congratulated the Jama't for issuing the advisory. "The culture of nakedness, immodesty and alcohol is poisonous to every human society. Not even a common person will accept this thing and Jama't are the callers to Islam, they should talk about it and I congratulate them for talking about this issue," he said.
Angered by Geelani's biography which hit the stands last year, Jama't sought an explanation from him. In response, Geelani issued a disclaimer saying the views expressed in the book were not his. "I respect freedom of speech and expression and cannot strangle anybody's views", he said.
The Jama't threatened pullout from the conglomerate. However, the decision was deferred following assassination of Moulana Showkat near a mosque in Gaw Kadal area last year.
Kashmir is in the middle of a flourishing tourist season. The government expects record number of tourists this year. Nearly 15 lakh tourists arrived here last year and over six lakh tourists have visited the Valley this year so far.
