Omar discounts vision, banks on political rhetoric | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 11: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had once again raked up the bogey of Article 370,which grants special status to the State, which many view infringe up the rights of Centre for pan-Indian law and a complete one singe nation. In his address at Srinagar, Omar referring to Art 370 said: "Hum martey dam tak is position ko barkarar rakhney kay liye khadain rehenge (we will stand by this position for all time)." Omar's political passionate comment, though some view it as political rhetoric, are not very different from the one he made during his brief speech at special session of parliament at the height of 2008 Amarnath land row. Omar had then said: “Hum Kashmiri ek inch bhi zameen ka tukda nahin denge." He made this comment, which evoked huge counter response, was very much aware of the fact that Centre had no intention to settle 'non-state subjects' in Kashmir especially at a height of 14,000 feet where no one can survive. The CM, then MP, made this comment for public consumption and for appealing to the sensitivity of his local voters. On Wednesday, he did the same when he knew that Centre has no plan to change the course of the Art 370 but is in no way going to accept the NC document on 'Autonomy' in toto. It becomes more clear when even the report of interlocutors had said that 'Clock can't be set back." The tone and tenor of CM's speech was on the lines used to be given by his grand-father Sheikh Abdullah, who was accused by his political opponents for changing his political ideology to his advantage. The fact was corroborated by NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal who in his address said that Omar is heading the mission of Sheikh Abdullah. Omar could have used the opportunity to show more rational political maturity by allowing people to understand his vision rather than political rhetoric and political bashing of the opponents, which the occasion, doesn't deserve. |
