Tight security arrangements ahead of martyrs day, separatist placed under house arrest

srinagar, July 12: Stringent security measures have been put in place around the Naqshbandh Sahib graveyard where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other leaders will pay floral tributes on Martyrs Day tomorrow. The entire area around the martyrs' graveyard or "Mazar-e-Shohda" at the shrine of Khwaja Naqshbandh Sahib at Khwaja Bazaar has been put under a heavy security cover.
Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has already announced its programme to pay tributes to the martyrs. However, separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mohammad Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan, Zafar Akbar Bhat and Shaid-ul-Islam have been placed under house arrest as a precautionary measure by the Government .
Hurriyat Conference has planned to take out a march tomorrow from the Jamia Masjid area to the martyrs' graveyard to offer special prayers.
A senior police officer told Early Times that rallies by Hurriyat leaders in the past had turned unruly and violent, leading to loss of life and property, so their moment has been restricted by placing them under house arrest.
He said since prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were in force in the city, the authorities will not allow any illegal assembly of people as it can lead to law and order problem.
More than 22 men were shot dead by soldiers of Kashmir's autocratic ruler on July 13, 1931 after people of Kashmir had risen against the rule of the Maharaja.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is expected to lead mainstream politicians in paying tribute to the martyrs. Opposition PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is also likely to visit the graveyard.
Pradesh Congress Committee president Professor Saifudin Soz was scheduled to lead the Congress workers to the martyrs graveyard to pay tributes to the martyrs of 1931, however, he got stuck in New-Delhi owing to the party's hectic lobbying for the post of Vice-President of India, sources said.
National Conference firebrand leader Dr. Mustafa Kamaal will also visit martyrs graveyard to pay floral tributes to the martyrs.
The State Secretary of CPI(M), MY Tarigami, appealed the political forces to come forward for making the State a prosperous and peaceful State through collective efforts.
"We should resolve to fight injustices of all kinds and work for a common cause of well being of the people," he said.
Marxist leader who will also pay tributes to the martyrs tomorrow, said the sacrifices made by the martyrs against autocracy inspired the people to strive for establishment of a true democratic setup in the State.
Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hasan Mir and chairman People’s Democratic Front Hakim Mohmmad Yasin will also visit the martyrs graveyard in the morning.
