Shall there be a day for Kargil Martyrs? | Martyrs' Day | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, July 12: Not just the separatists, the mainstream polity of the Valley is bubbling with enthusiasm in observing Martyr' day in the memory of those who died while trying to fan the maiden sentiments of separatism and alienation in the Valley. In the backdrop of these celebrations, many ask if there will ever be a day for those who laid down their lives in a bid to keep the country united. A saint who was recently on a visit to the State, was very categorical in pointing out that the three regions of the State of Jammu and Kashmir had nothing in common that could lay the basis of their staying united. "People of Jammu and the Valley are so different in so many ways that it seems that binding them together with an external force was a futile exercise" said the Swami questioning that if seven States of North East could be carved out of erstwhile NEFA, State of Jammu and Kashmir could also be reorganized within the existing framework. The swami may not have been an expert on the State of Jammu and Kashmir, yet, the point he made can be well corroborated by more than one ways. 'Martyr's Day' being celebrated tomorrow in the Valley is just one of those many ways. Twenty three people were killed on this day in 1931 while they were protesting against "Tyrant Dogra Rule" of Maharaja Hari Singh. Separatists see this day as sowing the seeds of Kashmir's struggle for freedom from India. "It is the day, they say, that laid the foundation of the "Kashmiris' freedom struggle". Shabir Ahmed Shah, chief of the separatist Democratic Freedom Party, feels that 1931 stirred the conscience of Kashmiris for freedom. Besides separatists, an elected Government had went on to announce funds for the memorial as a tribute for those who had died in the agitation. While mainstream politicians of the Valley satiate public sentiment eyeing vote bank, the question many ask in Jammu is, when would a memoir be constructed in the memory of those tens of young men who sacrificed their lives to keep up the integrity, sovereignty and honour of this country. Meanwhile, people of Jammu are happy that tomorrow would be a holiday and they could go out and have nice time, little realizing that the day they were hoaxed to celebrate also marked the beginning of a Kashmiri political dominance in the State which has continued till date uninterrupted and unchallenged. |
