Administration turns blind eye

Early Times Report
Bhaderwah , July 13: GREF is running illegal stone crusher on Bhaderwah Bani road and other private people too have established illegal brick kilns all around the town. Bhaderwah Tehsil of Doda district is the only place where one can find the iron chimneys (moving chimneys) being still used in the brick kilns while in all other states of the country fixed chimneys (cemented chimneys) have taken their place.
The iron chimneys are responsible for causing a lot of pollution as compared to the fixed ones. The movable iron chimneys on the other hand are just 30 to 40 feet in height, and does not have settling chambers or filters and hence the dust, smoke and hazardous gasses are spread in the surroundings and thus polluting the environment making it dangerous not only for the human and animal life but for the vegetation and plantation as well.
This is unfortunate that the state government seems least bothered about it. Although almost every day there are discussions over TV channels over the seriousness of this issue and the need of closing down of movable iron chimney brick kilns, yet there have been no effective measures excepting the hollow promises from the State Pollution Control Board, said Nerbick a social worker. Now that a bill has also been passed by the state assembly about the brick kilns, can at least now, expect that something concrete gets done in this regard and steps start from now to close down the unauthorised kilns to save the population from the hazardous effects of such units added Dr Vaneet.
The iron chimneys emit as much as 10 times more nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide than modern brick kilns (cemented or fixed chimneys). Thousands of people living in Bhaderwah area where there are brick kilns suffer from asthma attacks, cardiac problems and upper and lower respiratory problems associated with fine particles released from brick kilns. The elderly, children, and those with respiratory disease are most severely impacted by fine particle pollution from brick kilns.People from many areas, many a times agitated this issue and wanted the government to come to their rescue, but they have never been heeded to. It needs that the concerned agencies, be it State Pollution Control Board, the District Administrations, Deptt of Health to take a serious and effective initiatives in Bhaderwah town where illegal brick kilns have mushroomed over the years. The steps to put a curb on such kilns are urgently needed so that this piece of land known as a "Bhaderwah- a heaven on the earth" is preserved and protected.
