Early Times Report
Doda , July 13: Lack of teaching staff and inadequate infrastructure is adversely affecting the education in the government run educational institutions in the Doda district. Despite the fact that huge funds are being pumped for improvement of education sector in rural areas under centrally sponsored scheme SSA, the schools in this district are lacking the facilities, especially the staff. The residents of the Doda ,Bhaderwah ,Bhalessa and Thatri alleged that maximum staff of the rural schools are attached in towns due to which rural schools have become defunct from the last two years .
"The pitiable condition of government schools and the poor quality of education could be gauged with the fact that Government Middle school Koti ,Doda and GMS Tippri Thatri has only two teachers for more than 250 students," the residents of both areas said adding that the students till 8th standard study in just two rooms.
"Due to the shortage of teachers, people are forced to migrate to urban areas ," the residents said adding that they are not able to teach the students studying in middle classes regularly. "As a result, students are not being taught properly and teachers are attached to near by their homes or in ZEO offices ." "We are not able to do justice with our profession. Due to work load we remain over-stressed which mar our performance and affect our health,'' a teacher of school told on the condition of anonymity. The students are also suffering due to lack of space in the educational institution. "During rainy days the students of lower classes including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are asked to return home owing to the shortage of space," the residents said.
They said the students of class 4th are made to sit on verandah. The classes of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th are over-crowded and on normal days, the students of lower classes are made to sit in the compound of school under open sky, the locals added.
They said the headmaster's office is used as office cum kitchen for mid-day meal scheme. "During 2009, a three room additional building was sanctioned for the Govt High School Bharath native village of MLA Doda under SSA and the structure was to be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 2.50 lakh. "But after constructing the plinth, the work on the structure was left midway and the authorities didn't even tried to restart the work on the building," the locals added. "Many a times we brought the matter into the notice of the concerned authorities, but nothing substantial has been done till date and the building is still lying incomplete," the residents of the Bharath area added. The situation is worst in Middle School Johra where four teachers are teaching more than 300 students. In comparison to this, there are 14 teachers for 60 students in government Girls Middle school Zangalwar ,Thatri .
When contacted Chief Education Officer Doda told media that "there is shortage of teaching staff in Doda schools as more than 200 posts of teachers are lying vacant.
After filling these vacancies we will rationalize the staff vis-à-vis the number of students."
